Did you see it? If you did, you'd know the answer to that question.
No, that is why I'm asking.
Mostly because the novel itself would have been very very hard to translate as a musical, with its loose structure and tiny plot. So the creators took the path of least resistance and turned it into a conventional romantic comedy, only with the tiny plot remaining, so the story was completely predictable from start to finish.
Also, the score, as many have said, was comprised of soft rock numbers that the characters would not, in their right minds, be caught listening to. The songs were rather bland, really, falling squarely into that "I've heard this song before, and the other song was better" category (mind you, I own the cast album and enjoy it).
And, most of all, the show tried to capture an audience that wouldn't be caught dead at a show like HIGH FIDELITY: men in their twenties who love rock 'n' roll.

i LOVED the show! It had a fantastic fun score, and great talent! The set was extremely well designed, and the lighting really helped support the mood and tone of the piece. I never read the book, so I dont know how it translated, but as a musical, it was great! I was there opening night and there was SUCH great energy! What a fun cast!
Nothing
It was not great theater & probably would have done better off broadway. The score was OK - I gave it an eight - good but not great.

It wasn't bad, it was just mediocre. Problem was that David Lindsay-Abaire couldn't figure out a way to make a character who wasn't compassionate compassionate. All of the characters were good-for-naught assholes who nobody could either relate to or feel bad for.
I liked the music. I LOVED the set.
The set was endlessly creative! It's a bad thing when the set is the best thing about a show though.
Having seen the show twice during its Boston run (1st preview and last performance), I'd say BustopherPhantom really covered all the reasons that it didn't work. It was flawed in its very concept, but you couldn't help feeling that it was a show that was very close to being good. I was hopng that when I came back for the last performance, these very obvious changes would have been fixed by the creative team. They made changes, just not the right ones.
Hun, were you just born on 1/15/08?? the day you joined BWW. This was sooo last year! lol!

Not for us Scenic Designers.
Everything should be unfied, and work together, but if the show is that bad and the design is better it's not the worst thing for a Scenic Designer.
It had a great cast! I was sad to see it close.

I liked it, a lot. But it did have flaws (mostly with the book).
I'd like to see it have a regional life.
