OK, one more but I won't recite the lyric
"Where Are You Now That I Need You?"
Frank Loesser
from a film, not a muscial play.
The most depressing songs with lsophisication, style and class were written well before 1990.

"Oh please, "Artificial Flowers" has to be the most depressing song ever written! Its lyric concerns an orphaned waif who freezes to death while trying to earn her keep by making artificial flowers. It has a nice melody, but it tells a really unsavory little tale!"
The song is a joke. it's a parody of all those tragic late 19th century parlor songs like "In the Baggage Car Ahead." The giveaway is "waxing and wiring, she waned."
Fifty Percent - Ballroom
There Goes My Life - A Mother's Kisses - Closed Out Of Town
But You Go On - Annie 2/Annie Warbucks
I have no idea what the context is, but All The Children in a Row from The Rink is an extremely tragic song, beautifully performed by Liza.
