I attended the Sunday matinee of DESSA ROSE, and while it was not the final performance, the energy in anticipation of that evening's closer was palpable. The audience was on its feet at the start of the curtain call and stood and cheered for several minutes after. The cast was beaming. Rachel York even winked at LaChanze when the two of them were left alone on stage, basking in the glow of their much deserved bravas.
What a powerful, moving, and beautiful show this is. I was with four other people (we were scattered throughout the full house), and when we reconvened after the show, we were all in tears - including my male companion who is a professional musical director, composer, pianist and vocal coach. We loved everything about DESSA ROSE - first and foremost, the exquisite performances by the entire ensemble, but also the story, the music, the lyrics, the direction, the orchestration, the lighting, the sets, and the costumes.
Since I was sitting alone, I struck up conversations with the women on either side of me. They were in tears, too, and they said that they were moved far beyond their expectations. One woman said she hoped that the cast and show would win a host of Tony Awards. When I told her that they were not eligible but that LaChanze, Rachel York, Norm Lewis, Kecia Lewis and Stephen Flaherty had all been nominated for Drama Desk Awards, she said, "Thank God. They were wonderful." I agree completely!
I am so glad I had the opportunity to see this show. The experience will live with me for a long time. My friends feel the same way. On the bus ride home, we kept sharing little moments that caught us by surprise and took our breath away. DESSA ROSE is a delicate flower, and it is obvious that it has been handled with love by everyone involved.
We also got to meet several of the cast members at the stage door. Rachel York was a doll, spending a great deal of time talking with fans, signing autographs and posing for photos. She said that she had missed the Saturday evening performance because of serious throat problems, and that the entire cast had been struggling with illnesses throughout the run. She suspected that there might be some kind of allergens in the theater that were causing the reactions in everyone. Boy, if that's the case, the LCT ought to get some kind of "sick building" expert in to check things out.
The most delightful stage door moment for me was supplied by Norm Lewis. When he came out (accompanied by a visiting Audra MacDonald), I applauded loudly for him. He looked at me and smiled broadly, then had his attention drawn by some autograph seekers. Meanwhile I turned back to talk with my friends. A few minutes later, I felt a tap on my arm. I turned and it was Norm Lewis! He came over to thank me for the kudos and to say hello. What a sweetheart. I told him how much I enjoyed his performance and the show, and he absolutely beamed. He said that DESSA ROSE has been special for every member of the cast and that they were really sorry to see it close. He thanked me again, shook my hands warmly, and then left.
Corine2, you are absolutely right. This man is delightful in addition to being immensely talented. His charisma seems completely genuine. In fact, I could say that about the entire cast. They were electric, on stage and off.
I can only imagine what it was like at the evening performance, especially with all the supportive colleagues in the audience. It is quite a tribute that so many stars came out on their off night to see DESSA ROSE. I'm glad the show went out with the accolades it deserves.
Best,
jmn
Grrrr! I HATE not living in NY! I miss out on everything.
Saw Norm Lewis in RAGTIME in Raleigh's NC Theatre. VERY good actor.
I cannot wait for the cast recording.
Since Jay is handling the cast recording, I'd say we'll be waiting until December.

I went.
It was INTENSE, intense...
Lot of theatre folk in the audience: Victoria Clark (whom I was sitting right in front of), B. Stokes Mitchell, Mary Bond Davis, Gregory Jbara, Julie Halston, Adriane Lenox...
Show was AMAZING, it was truly a gut wrenchingly touching and beautiful theatregoing experience...
The nice thing about limited engagements is that you can close on a high note.
Shame I missed it, oh well...that's life!
I cannot seriously believe you asked if it was Nessarose/posed a link to the other thread.
Really can't beleive it.
Sorry.
Thanks for your posts jmn and Thesbijean. I absolutely love this show and if I didn't have another committment, I would've been there Sunday. One of my best theatre experiences ever...possibly a new favorite show.
The Nessarose cross-post is completely sad and yet, pretty humorous.
