I've been meaning to post about this but I wanted to do justice to the show since there were so many wonderful things....and I haven't had the time until now.
The show had basically the same format as last year, actors do various songs from shows or sometimes original songs.
So....performances I consider notable:
Sutton Foster kicking off the show with a song called "You've Got Possibilities", it was a bit short but she sounded amazing as usual. Karen Ziemba (also in the first part of the show) performed a song called "I Had a Ball", but I'm not familiar with the show so I'm not 100% positive. I hadn't seen Ms. Ziemba perform since the "Mack & Mabel" show and her performance only reminded me of how talented she really is.
Bebe Neuwirth sang a song called "The Saga of Jenny" and, between the song lyrics and her own little hand motions, was absolutely hysterical. Ann Harada and Stephanie D'Abruzzo performed "The More You Ruv Someone".....I MUST get around to seeing Avenue Q. Ann Hara has an amazing voice, I saw her at the Chess benefit as well. Stephanie D'Abruzzo was also good, but I think I have to see her in the show to really appreciate her and the Kate Monster character. I saw her perform at the Actors' Fund holiday benefit where she and Kate Monster performed "Santa Baby". Not far into the song, Eartha Kitt walked on stage and made a point to remind them that...that is HER song. Then they did this whole hysterical number. I saw Stephanie at the show and told her I just wanted to tell her how much I liked that performance and she couldn't have been nicer and told me the whole Eartha Kitt thing was not rehearsed at all.
Anyway, Carolee Carmello sand "The Story Goes On" and nailed it. I love her in Urinetown and I really would love to see her perform in another show soon.
Idina Menzel was the last performer before intermission. She performed "The Wizard and I" and, in doing so, has moved "Wicked" to the top of my list of shows I must see. I even bought the CD after hearing her sing that one song.
The "Duo of Super Trios" was made up of the three girls from LSOH and the trio from "Hairspray". The trio from LSOH sand the title song of the show, then the trio from Hairspray came on and sang "Welcome to the 60's". Then....somehow, some way...they found a way to overlap the two so while one trio sang their respective song, the other song was on top of it. Not only did it sound AMAZING, but they used the tilting mirror from The Producers (since the show was at The St. James) and as they were overlapping their songs, one trio was dancing in a circle while the other danced in a circle arond the first in the opposite direction. It's hard to explain if you don't see it, but take my word for it.....it was very well done. It would never have crossed my mind to put those songs together so I admire whoever was able to put that together.
Christine Ebersole sang a drunken song called "Ready, Steady, Betty" from an upcoming show about Betty Ford and Victoria Clark (first I had heard of her) sang a beautiful song called "Fable" in from a show called "The Light in the Piazza" that is supposedly coming to Broadway sometime soon (?).
As for Heather Headley closing the show with "Home" from "The Whiz".......that worman needs to get back in a show already! She totally seemed to blow away everyone in the theater with her voice.
Ok, that's all I have time to write for now...I'll try to get back to write more later because I'm sure I'm leaving out something.
oh, one interesting person on hand was Cynthia Nixon who received a very warm recpetion from the audience, especially when, in her speech, she mentioned "Sex and the City" and how friendship was such a huge role in the show. Since the show had only had the finale a week earlier, I think everyone was still in "Sex and the City" mode.
