How does it work for a non-equity person to go to an equity call.

Get there early and be prepared to wait. And even then you may not be seen.

PEACE.

ok thats what I thought. I'm debating whether to go because I actually already have something to do that day. I wish there was a way to gage (or give an educated guess) as to whether or not I'd be seen. It's for Mary Poppins ensemble.

Go in the morning, sign your name up, leave your headshot, wait long enough to find out what's going on, go do what you have to do, and come back. Usually they don't see non-equity until near the end of the day for a call like that, if at all, so if you just need to be gone for a few hours you probably won't miss anything (but more waiting).

"I thought that that was just going to be a like one shot deal for me, you know, but they kept talking about it like, 'when we do the production, when we do the production', and I was like, 'yes, yes, when you do the production, cool, I will come and see it'". - John Gallagher Jr. on SA

ok maybe I'll do that. Does anyone know from experience what the likelihood of non-equity being seen at equity calls. I only know that with Phantom they usually do see non-equity, but with other shows I'm not so sure.

I would say that out of all the Equity calls I've been to (which is probably around 30...mostly at the AEA Center) I have been seen less than half the time. However, NOW is a good time to go, because the summer is a very slow season for auditions, as many Equity actors are out of town on tour or doing summerstock. For example, I went to the Avenue Q call last July or August, and there were only a couple of Equity actors there; all the non-equity actors were seen and I was there for less than 2 hours. The fall or spring are probably the worst times to go to Equity calls because there are many more people in town and they are PACKED all the time; very unlikely you'd get seen at any Broadway calls. But I would always leave a headshot and resume, even if they are overflowing with people; I did this for RENT and they called me a few weeks later to schedule an audition. So, you never know.

alex2155, if it's any help, the last Mary Poppins dance call (sometime in the spring of this year) they started with a typing combination and saw both Equity and Non-Equity performers.

Thanks so much Rymes_with_witch and Josephine2. That does help a lot. I think I might go then, it seems like now is the best time and if they looked at everyone in the spring when probably more people showed up then they'll probably look at everyone again (at least to type out)
