I have a question about gimme gimme. Ok, in the sheet music, it says, "or pin my future on the boy I love" but in Thoroughly Modern Millie they actually sing "or pin my future on a green glass love". Does anyone know why this is?

Ways to annoy people: Arrive at a meeting late, say you're sorry, but you didn't have time for lunch, and you're going to be nibbling during the meeting. Then eat raw potatoes. Ask people what gender they are,or Disagree strongly with everything anybody says:)

I think it's so, when the song is sung out of context, the reference doesn't go over the heads of the people who haven't seen the show (personally, if I hadn't seen the show/read the CD booklet, I would have no idea what a "green glass love" is). She sang it that way on Rosie, too.

My question is, why is part of "Not for the Life of Me" not included on the OBCR? ("Gotta be more than a country wife makin' babies til I croak/Gotta be more than a leading role in a farmer's daughter joke")

I think I read somewhere that they made it like that because if the song is sang out of the context of the show "green glass love" makes no sense, so they changed it to something that would make sense when the song is sang by itself.

And in "Not for the life of me" Sutton never sang that verse on Broadway. They did on the tour and she sang it on the Today Show, but not actually DURING the show

As for the second question...the reprise just leaves out the first part of the country wife making babies..the Days of yore part is still in the show..she just has dialogue before she sings Days of yore kind and gentle ask me if im sentimental (not for the life of me)...etc

and all that I could do because of you was talk of love...

Ah, I never knew it wasn't on Broadway! I'd heard her performance from the Drama Desk Awards and just concluded from that that it was. Thanks for the insight, milliefan re: gimme gimme...

Seeing the tour of Millie a couple of months ago was honestly one of my better theater-going experiences. I love Millie.

Similar to Jerry Herman changing the lyric from Mame, "Where's the boy with the bugle?" to "Where's the boy/girl with the promise?" So listeners wouldn't have to be familiar with the plot of the show.

"Do you know ChrisLovesShows?" "Yes. Why, yes he does!"
