I'm having a severe self-evaluation moment here. I'm 17 years old, I need to start thinking about what schools I want to go to to continue my education, and I don't know what I want to do with my life.
Alright, so I know.. I'm absolutely clueless. And I know I probably sound insane. But my two interests are.. okay call me crazy.. political science and theatre. And I want a Broadway audition to just see if it's my calling. I just want to know where I belong. I don't want to spend my entire life doing something I hate (lawyer). I've been in play after play after play and musical after musical after musical, and it truly makes me happy. But I don't want to spend my entire life chasing after something that I'm not cut out for either.. ahh help. I just want to see if I can do it.
can anyone help me get an audition or does anyone have information to help me get an audition? i would appreciate it very much so.
wait you mean an audition for a bway show or a college?
Well where do you live? If you are in NYC the easiest thing to do is to pick up Backstage and find an audition in there and go to one. It is going to be daunting and scarry for the first time. Do you have a Head Shot and Resume? prepare and you will be fine! good luck...you will find what you love
" But my two interests are.. okay call me crazy.. political science and theatre."
Those are also my two main interests.
DO NOT GO FOR BROADWAY! Try auditioning for the theatre department at college and see if you get in. Talk to your career advisor at school and to your parents.
i really really love your icon.
sorry i cant help you with anything.
who says you can't do both? I have a good friend from college who majored in poli.sci. and continued to audition for shows in our drama dept. and he eventually ended up on network television, polisci degree and all..(one does not rule out the other you know)...and besides it's ok you're 17...jeez i coulda written your post myself when i was your age...and honestly i coulda written it yesterday and 17 was quite a while ago for me! It's never a waste of time if you love what you're doing...no matter what it is.

First, Listen to your heart, then research the possibilities, then go for it! Best of luck, or break a leg, whichever you choose!
as someone who went through this just two years ago...here's my advice. You're 17, and you KNOW what makes you happy, but if you don't have to drive to wake up at 3 am and stand in line for a Non-Eq./or Eq. call that doesn't even start until 2 o'clock the next day and you might not even get in...don't do it. This business is HORRIBLE! It's made for those who enjoy rejection it seems...:) But seriously, look at schools that let you major in Poli. Sci. and still audition for shows. I would consider a Second tier school, not a school like Juliard or NYU or Syracuse. I would go to a school like Western Michigan (Where I go....a lot of non-theatre students have great auditions and surprise the **** out of us!) or Webster University in St. Louis, or UCLA (they have a REALLY good up 'n coming theatre dept. and they'll let you audition without being in the dept.)
Anyway, my advice is that you look up all the schools you wanna go to and see if you have to audition to be a theatre minor, and if you can audition to be in shows without being a minor/major. If you need a list of really good theatre schools i have this amazing list of like all the good ones. but if you're looking into it as a minor,i can give you a few suggestions.
if you need any help, let me know!

gw in dc has the most amazing poli sci program (can you imagine a better place for it?) and they have a really good theatre department where it's easy to minor, and you do not have to be a major/minor to audition... look into it... andrew
I wouldn't recommend trying out for Broadway right off the bat because according the the people I talked to (it was something I really wanted to do) its almost impossible unless you have a firm resume under your belt. My suggestion is try out for some local workshops around whatever college you go to and then slowly build from there. I really want to go to NYU for theatre and try to work with NYTW for a while so I can get some plays under my belt before I start thinking about bigger things like broadway or union and equity tours etc.
Theatre and poli sci-- the two things I have degrees in! I'm gonna back bellalunatic et al on going to a school where you can do both. Sometimes I think the only thing that kept me balanced (dual degrees keep you busy) was having two distinctly different things I loved to do available to me. It's weird because I got accepted into an "top-tier" theatre school and ended up at a "second tier" because of financials-- otherwise I would have skipped the poli sci altogether. As it turned out, a lot of what I learned in poli sci helps me in my theatre career today. But like everyone said, find a school that doesn't require a major status to be involved in plays. College isn't like high school. No one's making you stay there, so if you want to take a semester off to try auditioning you can. By then you'll have had a chance to live and breath theatre for a while, something that's impossible in high school.
Hopping off the soapbox now...

I also have had some questions about this and many times, I've wanted to just quit school and begin auditioning. I went to someone I knew of who was a casting agent with some of my questions and concerns, and she advised me the best thing to do was to gain experience by getting involved and auditioning for all sorts of theatre, whether it be a no-pay community theatre, low-budget, regional, etc. She also told me collegiate theatre does provide training and experience, as well. Continuing to hone and nuture my craft were also things she advised me to continue to do.
Hope this helps.
ps...are you a junior?
i pretty much meant broadway.. or anything, it doesn't need to be that big.. just something that would get me used to it and to open me up to it professionally
see, i don't live in NYC. i live in northeastern PA and it's a 2 1/2 hour drive.. but something's telling me it's worth it
my dream school is definitely sarah lawrence in bronxville, NY.. which is also only a 25 min. train ride from the city. it seems perfect. but i'm so confused as to what i need to do. my drama teacher has helped me to start getting a portfolio ready and whatnot.. but it's the actual getting out there and finding auditions and stuff that i'm lost about. ahh.. i'm just so overwhelmed
actually, that school is on my list. and i'm going to be in DC from the 18th through the 23rd of this month for the presidential inauguration. how do i go about getting a tour or information?
that's what a couple of people have said, but then others just tell me to go and try. i'm torn. it's rough. i just want to know if when my friend's and people in this city tell me i'm amazing for my age, if it's the truth.
thanks.. that's the best, most unconfusing advice so far.

prettyinpink, there's no reason you can't do both in college. There are many ways to do it but if you want to double major, it's possible. I'm at Tisch and double majoring in English. It's not easy but it's certainly do-able. As far as getting an audition in the city? Well, there are certainly audition opportunities but it's rare that the audition calls are for Broadway shows. Even at the six month open calls for some shows, it's difficult to be seen if you're not Equity. I'm guessing you're only about 16 or 17 so there wouldn't be that many opportunities for you, in any case, because of your age. Anyway, auditioning is obviously something you've done if you've been in so many shows. Professional auditions aren't all that much different, truthfully, except that there are more people and you get to wait longer!
What is the portfolio you're getting ready with your drama teacher? Various songs and monologues? If so, that's a good start. I can give you some information about lots of college programs because I went through the process not that long ago. If you'd like some help, PM me. :)
" see, i don't live in NYC. i live in northeastern PA"
Where do you live? I'm in the Poconos.
I wonder what the relationship between theatre and political science is for so many people? Because those are my two fields of study as well.

However awkward it may sound...Poly sci/gov't and theater are a very common combo.---at least on the east coast (philly, here) Thats what I'm going after also. Who said you ever have to choose?? Go with the flow and see where you end up...I'm 17 as well and you can't worry yourself about the future or youll just get paranoid and go NOwhere...hope that helps
