Hi everyone,

I downloaded a song from a composer's website a few months ago, and now I can't remember who it was!

I'm pretty sure the song is called "I Just Wanted You To Know" and the lyrics begin:

There's a store on the corner
selling comic books and candyware
when I was 8 I lived a life of crime
I never did time
But I would steal little stuff
But it was enough
to feel that I would really rather spend the dime

Does anyone know this song? Or more importantly, does anyone know who wrote it?

Thank you so much for any help!

I only know it's from the flop "Breakfast at Tiffany's" because I recognize the words as being from the film.

"A birdcage I plan to hang. I'll get to that someday. A birdcage for a bird who flew away...Around the world." "Life is a cabaret old chum, only a cabaret old chum, and I love a cabaret!"-RIP Natasha Richardson-I was honored to have witnessed her performance as Sally Bowles.

Hm, I checked the song list for Breakfast At Tiffany's on ibdb.com and there doesn't seem to be a name that matches up to this song. Also, I think the song was written more recently than 1966. Maybe someone else is trying to adapt Breakfast At Tiffany's?

It was unsuccessfully adapted in the 1980s, I think.
(Check out the wall of shame at Joe Allen!)

If it is the original (which I don't think it is) the music was done by Bob Merrill.
There was a completely new version that debuted at the St. Loius MUNY in 2004 with music by Johnny Mercer and additional music by Bart Howard. I cannot seem to find a song list for that production though.

Right. I just checked that out. I know the speech is from the film.
It's from the scene where they spend the day doing things they've never done before and she takes him to Tiffany's.

Hm, this song is definitely not a Johnny Mercer-style song at all. Thanks for all of your help though! I've never seen the film so I don't know the speech.
