interesting gypsy news

the producers of the off-broadway production of raisin in the sun have booked the Shubert Theater starting in April. Guess the gypsy folk realize its not gonna run after bernadette leaves.

re: interesting gypsy news

The producers of Raisin in the Sun have booked A Shubert theatre not THE Shubert Theatre. There was a punctuation problem in the New York Post story you are referring to.

THE Shubert theater according to the house electrician and carpenter who were told by Shubert management

They probably meant A Shubert Theatre...not THE. I can't imagine a show like that, P. Diddy or no P. Diddy, going into a large house such as the Shubert.

Also, I think her contract is up in mid April.

Actually it was reported that John Dossett has extended his contract till Sept 2004. I think B. Peters will probably do the same....so Gypsy isn't going anywhere!!

Though I remember reading that B. Peters might take Gypsy to London for a run. Any truth to that?

Just because John Dossett extended his contract doesn't mean the show will remain open through September 2004. Don't get me wrong, I'd love for it to stay open as long as possible, but without Bernadette they'll close it and not think twice. That would be the wise thing to do.
And as for Bernadette taking the show to the West End? Well, I just don't see that happening for some reason. I was actually thinking about this today and how if the show transfers over to the West End that they should give Patti Lupone a chance. And Yes, I know some of the powers that be involved in the show don't like her or something or another...

Please folks...spelling check!!!

"Raison" is a French word. It means "reason"

The play you are discussing is RAISIN IN THE SUN.

re: re: re: re: interesting gypsy news

THE shubert theatre where Gypsy is playing is a Broadway house...seating compacties of a theatre determine whether or not it is an off-broadway house, off-off broadway house, or Broadway house...There for if THE Shubert Theatre where Gypsy is, is a Broadway House, then an off-broadway show COULD NOT book there...

re: re: re: re: re: re: interesting gypsy news

Tickets on sale till June doesnt mean anything... Oldest Living Confederate Widow was on sale through the end of the year and it opened and closed on the same night... so that isnt a real measure of anything...
Call it a regime change...

re: re: re: re: re: interesting gypsy news

But The Shubert Organization owns several Broadway houses so Raisin in the Sun could be going into a "Shubert" Broadway house without going into THE Shubert Theater.

Bernadette88: The show is coming to Broadway...therefore it would have to play in a Broadway theatre. Besides, I still maintain, like everyone else except the one who posted the original message, that it's going into -a- Shubert house.

I heard reliably last week that Bernadette extended her contract to September. Think that may be a publicity ploy more than reality, though. As for Raisin in THE Shubert...now that'd be a truly stupid choice.

lol! I said "reliable" not "100% accurate"! I believe it is true, but I also believe that it is entirely for publicity. I cannot imagine that the producers of Gypsy actually BELIEVE they'll make it that long. Silly, really.

I don't understand, why everyone is putting down Gypsy so badly?? I think it's a terrific show, staging is great, GREAT cast, and Bernadette Peters is handling it VERY WELL!! It fills to almost capacity every night....What's the problem?
I think it was definately one of the must-see shows of 03, and still is.
I think BP is performing the role unbelievably well, and audiences are enjoying it night after night. I hope she does extend her contract, and that she goes on with the show for as long as she can.
So tell me, what does everyone have with GYPSY anyway?
