Posted: 12/23/06 at 1:02pmShortly after this was on TV and they released the DVD and everything, Kristin said in an interview there was talk about a production in Paris in 2008. Does anyone know where I could find more information on said project? I realize that 2008 is still a long ways away, but I am curious if this is even still in the works... Kristin in this show in Paris, I am so there, LOL! Thanks for your help in advance!

It was supposed to have been done at Los Angeles Opera but that has since been canceled..or at least put on indefinite hold.

From a recent NY Times profile:
“God knows I’ve made mistakes and been criticized for them. When I was promoting ‘As I Am’ last year, I went on ‘The 700 Club. I wasn’t thinking about what it represents. I guess I was living in a little bit of a bubble, and I was surprised that it upset so many people. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t go, because I don’t agree with that antigay stuff. I don’t understand what the big deal is with gay marriage. Get over it, people."

Posted: 12/23/06 at 2:58pmShe should go back on "The 700 Club" and state her views there instead of the NY Times. That way she could tell the bigots that she doesn't agree with their anti-gay views. Saying it in the NY Times doesn't reach the same audience as "The 700 Club".

Yes I'm SURE they would let her do that...and how do you know she didn't state them in the interview before? They would never have aired it if she did.

Posted: 12/23/06 at 3:19pmIf she stated them in the interview on the show, then she would have mentioned it in her "apology" in the NY Times article. Sorry, but I don't buy that she didn't know what "The 700 Club" was all about. If you do, that's fine but I think we have another Donna Summer on our hands.

not even close to Donna Summer..Cheno has talent.
And she apologized previously right after it happened at an AIDS benefit where she performed, as well in a couple of gay publications. She has apologized repeatedly to the community she offended.
And for the record she was completely upfront with another Christian organization regarding her beliefs about gay people and she was cut from the program.

Perhaps she said 2006 and she meant the production discussed in this thread, but she decided to do The Apple Tree instead.

Although I have a memory, perhaps incorrect, of her saying in an interview around the time of the NYPhil Candide that she didn't want to play Cunegonde again.

Is this the same one with Patti, if so, what a awful show. Maybe i just missed something, i found it hard to follow, had no idea who was doing what to whom and why it was being done..
Having never seen the show before or read/know any thing about it, i was lost and confused.

The problem with Candide is that with each production, someone feels the need to include every note that Bernstein ever wrote for the show, and it has become an unwieldy mess. IMHO, the only production to ever get it right was the first Hal Prince production in the 70's. Maybe not the most gifted vocally, the show absolutely caught the spirit of the novel, and at an hour and forty minutes without intermission it was nearly perfect.
I agree that the PBS production with Chenowith and LuPone was a horror, but then again I've never been a fan of either (DEFLECTOR SHIELDS UP)

Posted: 12/24/06 at 1:07amI liked the Cheno/LuPone version, but it was definitely something you had to really pay attention to to catch the story line. The first time I saw it was somewhere from "Glitter and Be Gay" onwards and I was really lost and confused and thought it was totally stupid. But after watching from the beginning, I loved it. But whatever, I suppose it's not for everyone...

Posted: 12/24/06 at 2:10amI find most of the music to be absolutely beautiful. The story and show is an absolute mess, so I just saw it as a performance piece that let the performers and music shine.

It's a densely written show, so yes, folks, you have to pay attention if you want to keep up. The PBS concert was pretty credible, as concerts like that go (I really liked "Candide's Farewell" and the auto-da-fe), but Cheno was just a little too one-note in her presentation of Cunegonde. Lapone was a wasted effort, but everyone else was a howl.
But again, Candide isnt for a passive audience, neither the musical nor the original book.

I'd just like to state for the record that I fully support Kristen's views.
Also, this was the first ever production of Candide that I'd seen, period, and I think it is amazing.
