Posted: 5/11/07 at 8:43pm"We Will Rock you" was live...not sure if anyone mentioned that. I don't mind live albums for things like concert recordings, but I dislike them as defacto ones like "We Will Rock You" or "Woman in White" (though no amount of studio recording could convince to buy that album to begin with...).

There are several dutch cast recordings that were recorded live, like:
My Fair Lady, Chicago (Advertised as the only double cd-set of the show :-S), 42nd Street, Jesus Christ Superstar, Mamma Mia
The cast recording of Cabaret was 'made live' with audience-sounds but was actually recorded in a studio.

JESUSCHRIST SUPERSTAR was also filmed on a soundstage and it's pretty bad. Eric, I agree with you, I dislike it when they do that. The way PASSION did it was great though I prefer the way they went with INTO THE WOODS and SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE because I believe the performances are different when there's an audience present.

Man of La Mancha's London recording was done live, but that's long out of print.
Nope. It was studio recording of most of the show but with dialogue trimmed considerably. The 2 LP set runs barely 90 min.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
