re: looking to expand my musical horizons

Well this would be my ulr=timate list so far.

PASSION - I can't believe no one has mentioned this yet. A touching story of two young italian lovers and a deathly ill woman who changes their lives. (get the original broadway cast by sondheim)
Sweeney Todd - Another beautiful masterpiece by sondheim about a man who returns to london with a different name after being locked up for 15 years by a judge who lusted after his wife.
Candide - A comic operetta in two acts by Bernstein showing the lives of four youths in Westphalia and how their "best of all possible worlds" goes awry. Very humorous and entertaining. (get the new version with Kristen Chenoweth, Paul Groves, and Patti Lupone at lincoln center!)
Wonderful Town - Another Bernstein piece about two sisters who move to manhatten from ohio and who try to make it in the city. Extremely funny, especially if you can get the new one with Donna Murphy.

Oh...

and SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD.

That is an absolute must have too.
"...But Kungurtseva reels off multiple fouettes and the tape is stopped so she can take a bow. The Jester, an abomination introduced to Swan Lake in Soviet times, extorts applause from the audience. The cuts don't help the storytelling, the production is bare bones and they go for the '50s-style happy ending. The audience cheers like mad at the end. It's the Russian ballet, after all..."

Ditto, FOAnatic about the revival Cabaret. Mmmmmm leopard print carpeting...oh, sorry, we're talking recordings, aren't we re: looking to expand my musical horizons (Sorry, when I think Cabaret I think of the leopard print carpeting in the refurbished Studio 54. I know Emcee knows what I'm talkin' about re: looking to expand my musical horizons)

Also:
Jane Eyre (especially if you get a hold of the revival Assassins recording--both have the wonderful James Barbour re: looking to expand my musical horizons)

If you don't mind Gershwin, the recording of Crazy For You is nice :) (I'm really struggling to contribute something worthwhile, in that most of the answers I usually think of are already mentioned :P)

Fiddler on the Roof--I haven't heard the revival, but hearing Zero Mostel do "If I Were a Rich Man" is a must.
Q: What is the most weirdest or funniest thing a fan has asked you? Joe Flanigan, Stargate Atlantis: When a fan asked me for help with his grammar. I'm available.
