I'm not sure if this is exactly the right board to be asking on, I apologize if it isn't...

I'm beginning plans of where I want to apply for internships for NEXT summer (I'm a little anxious, lol.) I want an internship in NYC...theatre related...and thought I'd ask here for any advice or tips from anyone? Or any sort of good experiences or suggestions of places to try for? I would love to do casting, but know little about the main casting companies. Anything else would work though, really, just anything theatre related in the city is what I'm after.

Thanks!

Look up casting agencies and send your resume out everywhere. Thats what I did and I got a great internship. Granted, its not in casting or anything but just get your resume out there.

The best advice I can give is to prepare all your sources. If you are interested in a "Casting" intership, you can find all of the companies online (Google). A lot of times you can check playbill.com for internship listings. Be advised that a lot of these internships are non-paid, or low paying and several will only hire those who are receiving college credit. Most casting directors/companies are also not interested in actors/performers, so unless you are intersted in a future career in that field, you may want to reconsider. If you are not currently residing in NYC, I do know that NYU has summer housing for a reasonable price.

Another field you may also want to consider is General Management/Company Management internship. This gives you, in my opinion the best overall perception of what it takes to operate a broadway/off broadway production. You will work one-on-one with Company Managers of various shows, in addition to daily tasks within the office. You may be asked to do mind numbing projects, coffee making, envelope stuffing, but its all well worth it. If you are offered a "full time" position, take it. It shows a bit more determination on your behalf. I had a terrific experience working at 101 Productions Ltd. (General Managers of Spamalot, et al.) several years ago. I was also fortunate to have worked in the office of Stuart Howard Associates (Casting) right out of college.

Best way to spot General Managers, Casting directors, etc. if you are not computer saavy, would be to look at recent and past Playbills of broadway shows. All of their information is in the back of the program.

If I can assist you with anything else, please feel free to contact me anytime.

Anthony!~

I would send a professional cover letter, and a resume' to prospective companies (2-3) months in advance. Typically they are looking for people for particular seasons.

Send your resume and a personal letter to casting agencies and say you're interested in internships. And if they don't provide internships, that you would even just like to sit in the back of the room and observe some casting sessions.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

All I can say is just keep trying--it's not an easy thing to get. I've been trying to get an internship in theatre since April and I just got one last Thursday, and I'm starting my first day. There was a lot of not even getting interviews, getting interviews and not getting anything. There were a couple of times I was pretty down, thinking it was hopeless, but I kept "pointlessly"(in my head) sending out resumes and I finally got one.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

E-mail is the fastest way. I e-mailed a few different casting places for this year and got an internship at a more commercial/voice over place. I got a copy of the Ross Reports and then Googled some of the names in it and checked what kind of credits they have. Jay Binder and Bernard Telsey are big theater ones. They do almost everything on Broadway. I think Jay Binder wanted someone with a little more experience though. A lot of them have websites with E-mail addresses listed right on them, if not there's always the real mail.
