Hey all! Everyone was so helpful with my last question about The Women, and I hope I can get some help again, because I haven't been able to find an explanation for this line anywhere.

COUNTESS: Helas, what else can a woman do with her youth but give it to a man?
MIRIAM: Helas, she can't preserve it in alcohol.

What does Miriam's response mean? Is she making a general remark because everyone in the room is drinking, or is she referring to Sylvia or Countess in particular?

Please PM me with responses, because I'll be away for a few days and by the time I get back on, this thread will be somewhere in the land of oblivion. one more question about The Women

Mille grazie!
