Funny Girl is a great movie from a just ok show.
Cabaret and Chciago are brilliant movies that predated first rate revivals of musicals that were fine but not nearly as good in their original productions.
West Side Story is an amazing movie from a first rate musical. The film arguably betters the show.
Oliver is a film of genius, much better than the musical.
Fiddler and My Fair Lady are two of the greatest musicals ever, and they were lucky to have excellent film adaptations (although of course, wouldn't it have been loverly to have an Eliza who actually sang - even it we had the consolation of the legendary Audrey Hepburn)
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN - Movie (I'm in the minority that love the show, but I adore the move even more).

The movie of Chicago did not predate the revival. I really doubt that the movie would have been made if it weren't for the revival. I thought that the revivals of Cabaret and Chicago were both superb productions that did great jobs of re-imagining the shows. I'm in the minority about this, but I found the Cabaret movie dull and boring, while I find the show quite thrilling. I think that the theatricality of the piece that I love so much just doesn't come across on film, especially when about half of the score was cut and important characters were almost completely ignored.
I read this entire thread and found myself reading posts that I had made more than 2 years ago.
I watched the film of FUNNY GIRL yesterday and frankly I hated it. In my opinion, Omar Shariff cannot act well and all the scenes with him are boring beyond belief. Just like in the stage musical, the second part of the movie drags, with long empty pauses. I saw the Broadway musical wih a young Barbra Streisand and the first act was so much tighter and exciting than the first half of the movie. And although the second act dragged, all numbers with Streisand were superb.
Are they really going to revive FUNNY GIRL?

I watched the Funny Girl movie back in December--or, at least I tried to. I stopped watching after a little more than half an hour. I just thought that it was boring. I hope the same can't be said about the show.
I'm sure I've made enough of an impression on my opinion about this here, but I think that the Phantom movie was far superior to the show. Many complain that the voices in the movie are not up to par, but I found them all much easier to listen to than Sara Brightman.
