#0Jekyll and Hyde question
Posted: 10/16/06 at 8:54pmWhere in Jekyll and Hyde does the song "No One Knows Who I Am" come? Who sings it, what's going on, etc.? I've googled it and gotten no help, so I thought I'd ask. I've just been asked to audition for this song tomorrow, so I don't have time to do a whole lot of searching, so any guidance would be wonderful. I don't know the show at all, so some background info would be great. I will try to read a full synopsis by the audition, but it's pretty late notice. Thanks!

"No One Knows Who I Am" is sung by Lucy, the prostitute. The song is towards the beginning of the show, and is the first glimpse we see of her character. She's "an abused young woman who finds hope in true love," says MusicalTheatreAudition.com. She meets Dr. Jekyll outside her "brothel" after singing this song, and falls in love with him, although he's engaged to another woman. When Dr. Jekyll turns into Mr. Hyde, he pursues her, it's very sexy.

Good luck!

The song was originally recorded as a ballad.
In the Broadway version, for whatever reason, it was used as Lucy stands backstage at the strip club, getting ready while surrounded by the other girls. It became a much more throwaway, even humorous, delivery. Maybe they thought they were too ballad-heavy. If I remember correctly, Lucy is supposedly looking in the mirror when she sings "not even you".
I don't remember whether it is included in the licensed version of the show (that was based on the national tour, and i'm pretty sure the song's not in there, as Lucy's first appearance at the club is her entrance in Bring on the Men) but it was included in the recent concert version and the new "Resurrection" album. You could probably search MTI for a song list and see if it's in the current licensed version.
P.S...I think it is one of the best tracks on the "Resurrection" album...probably worth buying from itunes and giving a listen (or, of course, there's always Linda Eder's terrific version).
