I love videos like this. And I am equally impressed that they sang live, are talented, and didn't do voice-overs to their own track!??!!!!! How did they mask the city background sounds????? (Unless they just fooled me with the lip-synching, which would then be some of the best I have ever seen!).

If you have really good equipment you can mask the city sounds easily. That was probably done in post though. If I were to make a guess I'd say that it was done the way many music videos are made. They went into a recording studio and laid down an audio track. Then, they had it playing in the park while they filmed and they sang along. This helps them keep the beat since there's no one playing the instruments live. They MAY have been lip-syncing but I think, in this case, they were singing along to their own voices. Then, when everything was edited together they tracks the city sounds were on are lowered and they put the audio on top. But there was definitely post production on this. Otherwise the music would have sounded far away and you would have heard the city sounds.
I don't know all of the details but my older brother has directed a few music videos and this is the way they've done it.

So funy, considering there is no sunshine to be had in this video (I'm joking)
They didn't "mask" the city sounds.... they were in the middle of washington square park and it was very dead around them -- there wouldn't be much of a city noise. and with that background music (and vocals) drowning out the majority of the camera sound, I doubt they found the need to do anything.
The backup vocals are dubbed in but the lead vocals are real, as you can tell, by the blatant difference in both digital production and quality.
Eris ~ You explained one way to shoot a music video. There are a few methods.
