I just heard the cast recording of the 1981 flop sequel to 'Bye Bye Birdie' called 'Bring Back Birdie'. The recording got me wondering if there were any other sequels to hit musicals that never seemed to make it. Does anyone know of any?

Snoopy was technically NOT a sequal but they considered it a "continuation" of sorts.

And of course, La Lloyd Webber was originally going to do THE PHANTOM OF MANHATTAN -- the sequel to POTO

"A Doll's Life" was a musical sequel to "A Doll's House", if that counts.

"March of the Falsettos" and "Falsettoland" were both sequels to "In Trousers."

I always think of "Let 'Em Eat Cake" as a sequel to "Of Thee I Sing," but I don't think that it truly was, just the same creators and stars.

I thought Annie 2 was entitled "Miss. Hannigan's Revenge"

In "The Best Plays" sereies of books(which I read every year).. there are entries in two different years.. one for "Annie Warbucks" and one for "Annie II: Miss Hannigan's Revenge" I remember them distinctly as each were accompanied by a photo.. on had a photo of the girl playing Annie seated on the ground with the dog playing Sandy. the other had a picture of the girl playing Annie standing next to a kneeling Daddy Warbucks and the dog.. the "Annie"s were different girls Updated On: 10/1/03 at 02:30 AM

Actually I wouldnt look at Annie Warbucks as Annie 2, I believe there is an actual Annie 2.

Another sequel to never forget is Grease 2...which I totally dig...COOOOL RIDER!!!!

Annie 2: Miss Hannigan's Revenge (starring Dorothy Louden recreating her Tony winning role) had an out of town tryout in Washington on it's way to Broadway. It never went anywhere else. When they realized that show was never going to make it, they considered taking that cast and turning it into a revival of the original. Miss Louden had no desire to go from a lead to a supporting role and bowed out, the whole production wemt by the wayside.

After years of revamping, Annie Warbucks opened in Chicago. Miss Hannigan had been completely written out and replaced with a new female villian. If I remember correctly, she was the only one from the Chicago production who made the transfer when it opened Off Broadway for a brief run at the Variety Arts.

Your Majesty, i have also mentioned my love of COOL RIDER in the "Guilty Pleasures" thread, but since GREASE 2 was only a film and not a stage musical, i think it might not fit here.

That's the history i recall of ANNIE 2 and ANNIE WARBUCKS.

My recollection is that A DOLL'S LIFE is the musicalization of A DOLL'S HOUSE (the Ibsen drama). To my knowledge there is not a mainstream musical of the title A DOLL'S HOUSE.

I really can't think of any other "sequels"...but can we consider WICKED a "prequel" to WIZARD OF OZ since there were many stage (and musical versions) prior to the film? or does a sequel/prequel need to be by the same creative team? DISCUSS...

Well, I don't think it has to be by the same creative team, in fact, I think that a sequel by the same creative team wouldnt be as exciting as a newer look on the subject matter.

And Long time no see Tx2, you know If it wasnt for the cool motorcycle scenes I would like to see it on stage (grease 2)

AND WASF THERE EVER A MINISERIES BASED OFF GREASE? IF not THERE SHOULD BE

Annie 2? That was suppose to be on stage?? ahh..

There was suppose to be a sequel to POTO but ALW cancelled it. I'm glad he did because I don't think it would have been as good as the one thats on B'Way now =-)

yeah Your Majesty i know i owe you snailmail, give me call i need to ask about what i was supposed to send you. Or text-message me, whatev...

and GREASE 2 onstage would be better than some things i've seen...great bowling alley dance number. Or maybe it'd be better if it was a parody, like those gay versions of FOXES and VALLEY OF THE DOLLS...

i completely forgot about Sandy Wilson's sequel to his THE BOYFRIEND, which was called DIVORCE ME DARLING and was set in the 30's a decade after the girls wed their beaus. Can't believe that BULLDOG or MASTER LCZ or DOLLYPOP or MR. ROXY or CHRIS LOVES SHOWS let this one slip by....especially after the buzz on BOYFRIEND with Julie Andrews directing it at her daughter's theatre, designed by her baby's daddy...

A Doll's Life is not a musicalization of A Doll's House, but a continuation of Nora's story after she slams the door on Torvald.

Magruder, sorry i didn't include you in the "likely suspects" to remember DIVORCE ME DARLING; your knowledge should have made you come to mind right away.

The synopsis of the Comden/Green musical A DOLL'S LIFE, as listed on the Leonard Bernstein website, is this:

A sequel to "A Doll's House," as imagined by an actress playing Nora in a modern production.

If she is playing Nora, it must be about that character and DOLL'S HOUSE somewhat. Strictly, it can't be a "sequel to a hit musical" as stated in Krelborn's first post, as A DOLL'S HOUSE was never a musical, to my knowledge.

So it seems DOLL'S LIFE is somewhere between your idea of it and mine. Anyone ever seen this show on stage? Seems an unlikely Comden/Green project to me (no snappy NYC lyrics and settings).
