Does anyone know if it's possible to catch actors at the stage door before the show starts, when they're first entering the theatre? And would it be rude to do so?

I'm planning on stopping by the LSOH stage door on Kerry Butler's birthday, and I'm sure she wouldn't want to be held up for too long after the show, so I was thinking of maybe catching her before it. But someone tell me if that would be completely impolite and a maybe a bit obnoxious...?

Oi, the more I talk about this, the worse of an idea it sounds like. But I'm not planning on running over and tackling her and screaming about what a big fan I am...just planning on handing her a card (yes, I am aware that it will not mean a thing to her, but I have to make an attempt) and a short sentence of praise. Well, help is greatly appreciated.

Well they have to be there a half hour before the show starts, so if you got there at least an hour before showtime you should be able to catch at least someone. I don't know how early she usually gets there so sadly I can't help you with that but if not you could always give it to another cast member and ask them to give it to her if you don't want to wait until after the show.

Oh, and no it wouldn't be rude.

And hang on, when did you win the discus?

I have caught a few actors outside shows before. They were always nice about it, but this was with the NICEST cast ever. It is also a little more personal because no one else is normally there. Kerry Butler seems nice enough (I have never met her, but whatever) and I think she would think it was sweet that u made her a card and came before because it was her birthday and u didn't want to keep her and stuff. I always get there an hour and a half before the show, that seems early I know, but you have a pretty much guaranteed chance of meeting her, unless there was a matinee, most actors don't leave in between. When I was at Gypsy, Bernadette didn't come out in between, but the kids, one of the Hollywood Blondes, the guys, and Tammy Blanchard (who was getting coffee) came out. Hope my ramblings helped you out some! Good luck!! :)

No, it isn't rude... but timing-wise it can sometimes be difficult. I think that they're required to be there half an hour early, but often they get there much earlier. And sometimes they go in the main entrance... I've tried to do this a few times at the stage door and I've always missed whoever I was trying to see. It's always been by accident that I've seen anyone going in the main entrance.

Equity requires actors to be at the theatre one half hour before curtain. However, some actors get paid more because they need to be there sooner. i.e. Hugh Panaro has two hours of makeup to do before he goes onstage so he's always there super early. I know Hugh Jackman (at least during previews) always would get to the theatre an hour and a half before the show.

Thanks for all the help, guys!!

I'm thinking of going an hour before the show. I'd love to go an hour and half before, but my parents wouldn't wanna hang around that log. Which sucks.

luvtheEmcee -- I'm kinda lucky, because the Virginia Theatre stage door is right next to the main entrance, so I don't have to worry about missing her that way. re: Stage Door Before Show

Thanks so much for the help!

Thanks, Governor!

Okay, just one more thing: Her birthday is indeed the 18th of June, correct? I was told the date a while ago and my post isn't in board history, so I just wanna double check so I don't sound like an idiot later on.

I saw a Sunday matinee of Hairspray and a Wednesday matinee the following week (yes, of Hairspray!)

On Sunday... the line to get in was long and I didn't want to stand, so I sat on the thingies by the stage door and Jeff Martin and Chester Gregory said hi to me as they came in.

It was the same on wednesday.. but the line was ALL blue hairs and screaming teenaged BRATS witha highs chool group.. so I sat in the same spot and was able to chat with tracy Jai Edwards for a few minutes, have a great convo with Brooke Tansley as she came in (and again as she left), Todd Michel Smith said hi cause he rememberd me, and Serege Kushnier and I had a great talk while he smoked a cigarette and chugged some juice before having to go on as Link Larkin..

soo.....

mind you, I did not "station" myself there to accost them or anything! LOL. And several of them approached me rather than me approach them.

Alright, I admit that sounded like I'm crazy. I promise I'm not... here's an example so y'all don't think I'm nuts: We were trying to meet Adam Pascal (who else?) so one of us was at the stage door and one of us was on the corner so we could see the main entrance. We weren't going to plow him over or anything. I'm not big on approaching people... anyone. I'm really shy. Sorry if that sounded stalker-esque - I'm a good girl, I promise.

Ive only gone to the stage door once before a show and it was a GREAT experience. It was the first time I saw Millie a while ago and I really wanted to meet Sutton and Gavin and I was able to meet Gav inside when he was collecting money and once again outside at the stage door, but I missed Sutton. So, I went to the stage door I think an hour and 15 mins before curtain and about 40 mins later Sutton came (I saw Gavin go in too but I didnt wanna seem like a stalker and meet him for the 3rd time) and my dad and I talked to her for a few mins and she was so sweet. She asked us our opinions of the show and where we were from and took pictures. She was great!

There's only been one time I hung around before a show to see an actor, The Music Man, with Bierko back in the spring of 2001. My friend and I saw him cross the street and walk up the block to the stage door. Our reaction was just to stand there giggling like two immature school girls as he walked past. Good times.
