Awww...this was the first musical I saw. :) I was 8. At the time I loved it, and it would be fun to see it again, but I definitely don't think that it reaches the high standards more modern musicals have set since its debut in the West End. All of the music in it isn't great, but there are a couple really great songs. And while I know some people find absolutely no redeeming worth in the musical, as in all ALW musicals, there is a valuable message at the end.

johnpopa i would have disagree with you. all the children that have seen the show so far have liked it and they understand the story. and the show is appealing to childern because it is about trains and and actors are skateing around on stage. all of the kids that i ahve seen come out of the theatre have liiked the show!

and thee reason why they dont have the tracks that come out into the crowd is that they have to beabel to fit into all of the theatres that they are touring at. the 1st tour that they had with the tracks only could play at a few theatres because alot of the venus could not afford to have the show play there because it would ahve been to much to put the show up. now they have cut the tracks out and added in the 3d more theatres can have the show play at there venu.

I've never seen Starlight but own both the original London cast recording and also the "New Starlight Express" cast recording as well just because I went through a huge ALW period about seven years ago. I think Starlight is sweet. Yah, it's silly, but is it any more fluffy than some of the other shows we've seen put on the Great White Way? I think it'd be a great first show for any kid. How could they not fall in love with roller blading trains? LOL

Depends on how I feel, I guess. The original was closer to what I'd call Broadway music. And I miss the introduction song for all of the cars, (Dinah, Buffy, Pearl and Ashley), on the new recording.

yeah i like that song to a lotta locamotion. but i think alw re-wrote the song for the tour because the version i heard on the tour is more pop like a britany sprears song. i heard a clip of the old version and it sounds a whole lot different from what i saw in the tour. i wish ther was a recording of the new version of that song!! and hat that call me rusty if you like is not on the new one

This was my first show as well! I don't know about you guys but I loved it. I still listen to the sound track (Greg Ellis as Rusty). Andrew Lloyd Webber's a favorite of mine only because no two of his shows are the same. More power to him.

"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

The only thing that is alike in many of his shows... is his music. I enjoy him very much myself, but have notices some themes in his shows are repeated.

I got an e-mail today from the TBPAC that tickets for this show go on sale to the public on Sunday. From what I read here, this sounds like a fun show. I think I'm going to check it out.

I'll let you know what I think when I see it.

Like someone else who posted earlier, this was one of my first 'big' shows. Hoping to capitalize on that nostalgia I caught the tour on its recent stopover in Atlanta....and call it rusty I must (sorry - could not resist).

All in all...the show was on par with theme park entertainment.
The new songs only weaken an already mediocre score...and with the spectacle replaced by 3D-film, why even bother? Though admittedly those guys on screen had more depth than their stage counterparts. Probably, this cat would have split had not my parents and a pal been with me. I had sprung for orchestra seats and spent most of the evening thinking the dough would have gone a lot further on cocktails + an IMAX flick.

i saw it WAY back when in London, but never Vegas or B'way or the first national tour. The tracks through the audience were very very very exciting. It was like the Cirque of the day. And compared to the current tour, the choreography was also better (though the same woman did it). This time they cast singers and taught skating, that time they looked for skaters for the chorus roles (the show is also smaller cast on tour). It was originally done in London at the end of the "roller-disco" craze, and the cast members did amazing leaps and lifts and tricks on the skates...nearly ice-show quality but rolling. The pop-rock score was appealing. They had some good ideas in the revised current tour, but didn't follow through on them very well. The problem is that children today can see better skateboarding and in-line skating tricks at the local parks and just on most big-city sidewalks. Otherwise i do think it's an okay kid's show to get them started in musical theatre.
