I'm taking vocal lessons like every 2-3 weeks. I want to practice in between, but I wonder if there's such a thing as practicing too much. I went to a lesson today and my voice is really tired (and it is on the verge of hurting actually). I wonder then if it's a good idea to practice everyday. Is it the same thing as physical exercising...when you're supposed to not exercise everyday and allow days in between to rest?
I do scales every day to keep my voice in shape, but if it hurts I do NOTHING: No singing, no talking, and NO WHISPERING (one of the worst things you can do to your voice)
Drink tea with honey.
Bring a tape recorder to your next lesson and tape your warm-ups. Then use that tape to warm up with every day.
I agree with the previous posts. DO NOT sing if it hurts!!! Give yourself and your chords some rest. Maybe do some light warm-ups to keep atrophy at bay, but please don't keep singing while in pain. Damage done can take months to undo and sometimes can't be reversed. Drink lots of water and be good to yourself.
You can definitely sing too much...but there is a clear difference between being vocally tired and hurting. Singing while vocally tired can lead to damage and pain, though.
When in doubt, rest. And that includes not whispering, which can be as stressful on your cords and full speech.
