So I heard that a cab crashed into Beauty and the Beast and the driver got arrested this evening in Times Square around showtime. Anyone else know anything more?

I'm confused
Did the taxi run into the theatre, the stage, the actors, a sign...?

Ha ha, I'm confused too! My friend who was there left me a message and then went to the play he was on the way to see, so I thought I'd ask here.. the imagery sounded pretty funny as long as no one was hurt.

Posted: 8/10/06 at 10:25pmI didn't hear anything about it. Your friend's show is almsot over, if it's not already. Could you get them to explain?

Okay, heard from my friend. Apparently, there was a huge crash during the massive downpour we had tonight and he walked by the Beauty and the Beast theater shortly after he heard it. It looked like a cab rode up onto the sidewalk and crashed the front left headlight area into the theater near the stage door (missed the crowd of people waiting to get into the show). There was an ambulance there already, and the police were as well. Three were on the driver, who was trying to resist being hand-cuffed.
That's all I've got!

Maybe not...but how long has it been running? Ridiculous.
Sorry, I just get annoyed when I realise that things that should have shut ages ago are still going. Like Chicago in London for instance...it's been rubbish for ages - really sloppy - but still it keeps going. All those shows should just CLOSE! Phantom, Les Mis , Chicago, STOMP...it's ridiculous that they're still going.

Yes, yes I do. But what I've found is that as a VIEWING experience as a member of the AUDIENCE, shows that I have seen (in the West End - I have't been to NYC yet) that have been on for years and years just seem tired. I saw Chicago a few months ago and it was SO sloppy. I just think close the shows, bring in new shows. What's wrong with saying that I'm sick of these shows. It would do them good. It did Les Mis good. Close them, in a few years time do an interesting revival with maybe a different slant on the material. Shows get old and tired...it's the way it is. All these great new shows are lined up for Broadway next season and people are actually saying "I don't know if there'll be theatres for that show...". Well then, close the old warhorses and bring in the new shows, and the revivals. New productions.
Bring in something fresh.
Have I made my point?
P.S. I'm training to be an actor myself at the moment, so I get your point about keeping people in work, but I think it's a pretty moot point. If they're good they'll get work elsewhere. Read "Making It On Broadway: Actors Tales of Climbing To The Top"...not a great book, but interesting. Most of the actors who were involved in the big warhorses like Les Mis, Phantom etc bitched like anything about there being no soul in them anymore. It's true and you can see it as an audience member.
P.P.S. Don't call me an ass. It's rude and it wasn't warranted.

"...do you realize how all the shows you mention keep actors and musicians and a whole slew of others working?"
And wouldn't a new production also employ actors/musicians/stagehands, etc.?

that's a pretty interesting scenario
sounds sorta cool
well, not cool for the taxi driver, but yeah
so, as curtainpulldowner said, what about the taxi driver? what happened with him? is he in jail? hospitalized? six feet under?...

Is that the same block where Mary Stout got hit by the Hot Dog Cart?
That's a Dangerous street.

camp_actor, the shows don't stay open if people don't go to see them, so if they're still running they are obviously popular, so some people apart from you obviously go to them and keep them open. Blood Brothers has run for ages, and has a cult following, the Mousetrap has been on 54 years! Is that not too long?
And in my personal opinion, not only should list theatres to keep them there, they should giv Les Mis a protection order, it's still as brilliant as it ever was and should run and run.

The Mousetrap is ridiculous. I saw it a couple of years ago and it was SO bad. The cast didn't have any life.
I realise that people want to go and see these things, but that is mostly due to the fact that they have been there so long they are "tourist attractions". It's like "While we're in London we have to catch The Mousetrap - it's been on 54 years, don't ya know!" It's a new kind of landmark - is that art? Does it actually say anything anymore?
Don't think that I haven't thought of the economic reasons - of course that's the reason they're still there, because they're still popular. That doesn't mean that they're any good. What it means is that producers know that it's a safe bet, whereas gambling on new projects is what it says on the tin - a gamble.
But theatre is about creating art and entertainment, it is a LIVING thing. And it is sad to go and see a show that is obviously very much past its sell-by-date.
