"That's a good point. Next time I pee on a Starbucks couch and throw straws and napkins at a barista, I'll just yell, "YOU DON'T KNOW ME OUTSIDE OF STARBUCKS! YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL!" and that should do it. "-LizzieCurry

Posted: 2/20/08 at 10:21pmMaybe it is just me, but I think a high school version of this show is just ridiculous! 15-18 year olds just do not have the life experience to bring life to this show. I am sure they can sing it, but it is like watching a high school version of Follies.... just silly.

Considering this has been discussed to death here and elsewhere (might as well call the Rent HS edition "Barbaro"), no, it's not just you.

The rights are OWNED by the Jonathan Larsen Estate - in other words, his parents.
The performance rights are LICENSED by MTI.

Posted: 2/21/08 at 3:29pmI dont think that High schools should be given the rights to this show either. There is no way that they could make a show lik RENT work at a high school level. I dont want to hear some highschool girl trying to belt take me or leave me!!

Posted: 2/21/08 at 3:31pmYeah, rights come out to all schools or junior productions ( all actors under 19, and no can be equity) this July. I'm begging my school to do it!

yeah, I'd much rather hear her singing Kate in KMK or some of the Gilbert and Sullivan stuff....
I think the point may not be to get a definitive version of any particular property, but for aspiring performers to take a shot at challenging material they are motivated to attempt.

The most horrifying point on MTI's list of restrictions for the school edition is the following:
2. The entire cast must be full-time High School, Middle School or Elementary School students.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS?!?!?!

Posted: 2/21/08 at 4:34pmmaybe that clause is for all their school editions, aimed at various ages...they are hoping the teacher/directors involved have the sense to cast appropriately.

Posted: 2/21/08 at 4:42pmYou may be right. The restrictions for the Les Miz School Edition are identical. However, the Ragtime and Sweeney Todd school editions do not have those restrictions, nor do any of the Broadway Junior shows, as far as I can tell.
