Hey. I'm dramaturging a production of "tick." I'm very familiar with it, but I was just wondering what your thoughts might be. What do you like, what don't you like...etc.

I saw the musical twice, and really enjoyed it. Since I knew it was put together after Larsen's death, I figured that the plot would be a bit stitched together; I wasn't bothered by much, except that the death of the friend frim AIDS, happens with absolutely no warning, and I found that a little hard to accept, a little manufactured, (perhaps so that Johnny can have his song about their friendshp ("Hey what a way to spend the day, etc, a great song, by the way.) The final song is really passionate; it is rally an anthem for today's committed youth---yet it has never really become popular. Hope your production goes well.

Um, his friend doesn't die; he's diagnosed with HIV. And I'm pretty sure everyone that's experienced that would agree that it's *always* without warning.

True that it was produced off broadway after Larson died. But, the off broadway production was far from just taking what he had and just stiching it together to make a show out of it. TTB was what he worked on right before Rent. All that was done for the off broadway production was take the original one man show book and change it for three people to do instead of one. They never changed the storyline or what he wrote at all. Same goes for the music. They re arranged the music so that instead of one person singing it it is now three.

The thing about his friend dying from AIDS is that it isn't his friend. If you look at the script ( which by the way is online don't rember the site but if you google tick tick boom libretto its there) it says that he found out that his friend has AIDS. Right before the song Why he talks about how is friends are getting sick and there is nothing he can do to help. keep in mind that his friend michale the one that has AIDS is there in the birthday scene and gives jon a couple of belts as a gift.

I think that what is sad is that ttb and Rent are his only two finished published works. All of his other shows were in the workshop phase when he died and are not really ready to be seen without someone working on them some more. I do not think that they are going to be seen by anyone because it would be wrong to have someone finish Jonathan's work just to turn it into a show.

No, the thing about his friend dying from AIDS is that there's no death.

I disagree. Tick Tick Boom had David Auburn (Proof) come on board as a "script consultant". And in the recent Curtains, a lot of Peter Stone's material was thrown out in favor of the newer Rupert Holmes stuff. Regardless of whether people liked the changes for either, I don't see why the unfinished work of one person can't be picked up by someone who wants to fulfill their vision.
