What is the difficulty for purchasing several tickets (about 8-10) for a Broadway show on the day of going into the city to see it? I'm thinking of seeing either BROOKLYN, CHICAGO, or THE PRODUCERS.
Probably no real difficulty, except with BROOKLYN. Order those in advance, or you won't get tickets.
The seats won't be the best. Maybe split the group into 4 and 4, or 3 and 3 and 3, etc. You'll get better seats this way.

Actually The Producers has had attendance figures in the 90s most weeks (it's still one of the top 5 best-selling hits on Broadway and is doing brisk enough business to still not offer any discounts). Getting ten decent seats for it same day would not be easy.
Chicago has also been selling quite well the last few months (attendance has often in the 90s).
Brooklyn shouldn't be a problem, though. I just did several random searches for 8 seats together on various dates in September and October and got orchestra seats each time (including a couple of Saturday nights). Must not be selling too well despite all the hype.

Okay, well I'm going to see what's available, thanks for the help. Wish me luck.

Are the ticket costs cheaper if purchased before the day of the show or on the day of the show?

No... not unless you risk it and try TKTS

Sorry I'm kind of new to the broadway world...what is TKTS?

It's the half price ticket booth in Times Square (there's another one downtown). Not all shows are up there though -- especially if they're selling well.

Also, you can only buy tickets for shows that day. It really is a risk if you have your heart set on seeing a show.
