I want to go see RENT again on the 27th of December and I am planning on going to the TKTS booth on Duffy Square. I have never gone to the booth and would like to know how to go about buying tickets. What time should I go and stuff along those lines. Thanks in advance!

First, remember they only accept cash or traveler's check. It also doesn't matter what time you get to the line. The box office from the shows keep sending TKTS tickets throughout the day. So you could go early and be the first person in line, go in the late afternoon and wait a little, or go at 7:30PM and pick up tickets on the way to the theatre and get just as good seats if not better.

get there EARLY. at least a couple hours before it opens, but it depends on the day/weather/tourists in town

Also, you might just want to check out broadwaybox.com and get a discount code...I love using the TKTs line, but only when I don't have my heart set on a particular show. Rent is ALWAYS up there, but you can save some time standing out in the cold if you just get a discount code...and does RENT still have $40 tickets with a student ID? I did that a few times.

You just show a valid student ID and get $40 tickets. The last time I did this was last April.

The tkts board sounds like fun, i would have loved to do it until i saw a message on an electronic sign they had up...it said that seating is not guarenteed b/c while they got some tickets from theatre box offices, a lot come from off the street, and are most probably illegal.
Ive heard tat if you go you should get there early b/c the line fills up quickly and the best seats go when they open.
Im going to La Cage tomorrow, i could check if the sign is stil there and get back to you

What? TKTS is a valid organization. They don't take tickets off the street (right?)

In regards to student rush for rent, I did it Thanksgiving weekend. $40 orchestra.

Why do we play with fire? Why do we run our fingers through the flame? Why do we leave our hands on the stove, although we know we're in for some pain? -tick...tick...BOOM!

The sign that I think you are referring to is the sign that says something to the effect of this: "Please don't buy any tickets from scalpers because a lot of them can be fake" or something like that.

Its interesting, I've always heard that you can get AWESOME seats minutes before the curtain goes up...even though that plan isn't ideal for people who like to know where theyre going and stick to a schedule.

I don't agree with the good seating thing - The last few times I went to TKTS, I was up in the Balcony, like Boy from Oz and Caroline Or Change - my nose started bleeding in the middle of the performance.

The secret, which i will share, is to go at 7:45 pm when house seats are released. No line and great orchestra seats.

7:45 is the best time to go. And then hussle on down to your theater. Just be willing to be flexible.

The 7:45 tip is the best...
Personally, I prefer the option of seat selection and do not use TKTS that often -- there are enough discounts out there to go to the box office or online if you are not in town..

When I do use TKTS I go to the booth at South Street Seaport (MUCH shorter lines) and I also pick two or three shows and ask the person at the window for the show with the best seats -- you also may have success by telling them you would consider seat that are not together (because you are a courteous theater patron and would not talk during the show anyway!)

well, since nobody wants to go to the theater with me, i'm usually alone!
Discount Codes are a solution, but most cost $65-75, as opposed to $50 for TKTS. It depends on how much you want to see a particular show and be guaranteed a certain seat.

I think it's really just luck of the draw. I was there last winter and got in line when it opened (the line can be long, but it moves really fast). I made a list of priorities, so that if they didn't have what I wanted first (or good seats for it), I would be able to quickly go on with out having to stand there and think about it. I ended up with my first choice show for that day (Little Shop), and was 8th row center.

Okay, I have decided that I will go to see RENT at this Wednesday's matinee performance, but entertainment-link.com says that TKTS does not sell Wednesday matinee perfomances. I have heard that TKTS sells some shows 2 for the price of 1 for matinees. Is this true?

Will they sell me tickets if I show them my student ID or something like that?

Honestly, you should probably just go to the RENT box office, show your student ID and get the $40 tickets. I don't think you need to bother with TKTs at all...there will be a long line and it will be cold...it's not like RENT is a hard-to-get ticket.

I thought TKTs did sell Wednesday matinees???? And technically, most of the tickets sold there are two-for-one, since they are half-priced.

I don't think RENT has Wednesday matinees, though...

Rent doesn't usually have Wed. mats but this is a holiday week and the schedule is different.

Here's another bit of advice (for what it's worth): The east line moves a bit faster than the one on the west side of Duffy Square. Sometimes it's moved as much as 10 minutes faster, other times a mere three minutes. For those who are not familiar with the area, the east line is the one closest to the Palace Theater.

It seems that the tourists come from west side of Times Square and automatically head toward that line, while the other line is populated by New Yorkers who know what they want and don't waste time asking frivolous questions at the window.
