how easy is it to get a decent, cheap seat in the summer?

It is variable and all depends on what tickets the shows release to the booths. Are you looking to go to Times Square or the Seaport location? The Times Square might be busier because it is in the middle of a high-count tourist area, so in order to better your chances at a decent seat, you might want to line up before the booth actually opens (I am unsure about the hours).

The South Street Seaport location allows you to buy TKTS tickets a day in advance. I would assume it is less busy because it is more out of the way for most tourists. I would go there first to see what you can get, and if you do not have much luck, go to the one in Times Square.

There is also one in Brooklyn, but I do not know if they let you buy day of only or if you can go a day in advance.
