so i'm thinking about shows that won best book and best score but missed out on the big one, best musical... since i'm only 20 i only know of falsettos, ragtime and urinetown... i was wondering which shows before the 90's had the same fate and what they might have lost to... sorry for being young as i'm sure some people will be annoyed that i don't know this... andrew Updated On: 12/14/04 at 02:19 PM

You might want to check out www.Tonys.org It has a comprehensive database that keeps track of all of that.

Here's the complete list of musicals that won best book and score, but not best musical:

On the Twentieth Century
Woman of the Year
Into the Woods
Falsettos
Ragtime
Parade
Urinetown

I got it from the Tonys site and it took about 10 minutes.

1978 - Ain't Misbehavin' and On the 20th Century
1981 - 42nd Street and Woman of the Year
1988 - Phantom and Into The Woods

Prior to 1971 sometimes Best Book and/or Score was presented to the Best Musical winner without there being a separate category. It was considered to be a part of the Best Musical award. La Mancha, Cabaret, Hallelujah, Baby!, 1776 and Applause (1966-70) come to mind.

In 1974 Raisin won Best Musical but Candide won Book and Gigi (16 years old at that point) won for Score.

There was also a three-way split in 2000. Book went to The Dead, score went to Aida, and musical went to Contact.

RAGTIME WAS ROBBED!

You know, I just knew you were gonna bring shame on this new family of ours, and it just figures you had to go make yourself over into some heroin-shootin skate board chic on the only day E! could interview you!" - Cherry Cherry, on her daughter Mary Cherry
