I'm not sure if this qualifies as an unknown musical, as I think it won a Tony when it was playing and that may give it some notority that I personally was unaware of, but STARMITES is...interesting. I was in it a few years ago, and it is...interesting. A really fun show to be in if you have a good cast, but if your looking for music to listen to, I must warn you that it tends to get on ones nerves after a bit.

"Unknown musicals" dont exist on this site, as alot of posters here are pretty much theater experts who know most obscure shows re: unknown musicals
I think it is great that you are seeking out little known musicals and share your eclectic taste. Some of my favorite shows were never on Broadway or closed quickly. Some of them are:

Metropolis - pop musical which failed in London based on the silent film of the same name, stars Judy Kuhn.

Prettybelle - Jule Styne flop which never made it to bway, starring Angela Lansbury - freaky story, but fun and dated score from 1971.

Canturbury Tales - 1969 pop version of Chaucer's tales. VERY dated, but I love that. A very young Sandy Duncan costars.

Metro - Polish hit that played on B'way for a few months in '92, w/ bad book, and okay music, but the performers were great (mostly polish cast) Hard to find, only recorded in Polish.

Will try to think of some more.

In terms of Off-Broadway...

Our school just did "Preppies" for our Spring Musical. It was an off-broadway show, back in the '80s. The guy who produced it, Tony Fingleton (who recently also did a movie called "Swimming Upstream" or something), and the guy who wrote it, Carlos Davis, both came to see our rendition of it! Very exciting, and I like bragging about it lol.

Also - there was another off-broadway show a few years ago called "Inappropriate". I never saw it, but I know someone who did, and they gave me a copy of the CD.

Both have really good music!
