visiting May 2017, what to see??!

So excited to have trip planned in May 2017. I am already scouring the news about what shows will be playing when we are there next May. This will be our 5th trip to NY in the past 10 years or so. Have had the pleasure (and luck) of seeing the original cast in Jersey boys, as well as Book of Mormon. Also saw Denzel in Julius Caesar (k, didn't care for the production, but still.....) and very much enjoyed Mark Rylance in Jerusalem. So its with great anticipation we look forward to next years trip and play choices. We have 4 nights in NY and are planning on 3 evenings at the theater and maybe 1 matinee. Right now the only 100% locked in choice is Dear Evan Hansen. Lots of buzz and looks like it will be stellar! But what else? Right now I have on the list, Burn This with Jake Gyllenhaal. Don't know too much about the story, and not seeing too much about this one, but thought it would be cool to see JG? Also have Willie Wonka on the list. Again not seeing too much buzz about this one? I thought with Christian Borle being the lead it would be a sure fire hit, but seems to be some concern over the music? Have read mixed reviews about the London production. Lastly had Come from Away as maybe the Matinee choice. Seems like a solid option? There seems to be lots of great shows playing in the fall on limited runs so we wont have any luck seeing those. Just wondering if there are any thoughts about the choices? I know its all personal taste so hard to comment....also wondering how long its safe to leave buying tickets. A couple of these shows start 3-4 weeks before our trip and I'm reluctant to leave it that long to buy tickets. I don't mind paying top dollar to get the seats I want....Thanks for any comments!

Some thoughts on shows I'm looking forward to and plan to see this winter/spring... I haven't seen any of these in any prior incarnations and I'm also not 100% sure if they will be open by/ until May 2017 but most of them are.

Oslo - sold out during Off-Broadway run
Arthur Miller's The Price - this opens in March, I'm assuming will still be open in May
Amelie - they're doing an LA trying this winter, so we'll hear more then
Miss Saigon
Anastasia - great word of mouth so far from their Hartford tryout

Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812

I try to avoid children's shows because they don't seem to do anything for me lol (exception for Anastasia cuz I saw the movie as an adult!)... I'm curious about "Burn This" as well, but only because of Gyllenhaal and care much less because it's not a musical. (I really want to hear him sing live!)

If you're willing to pay top dollar, then you should definitely buy in advance once you make your decisions, so you can get the choicest seat for the best value. In those cases I usually buy 2 months out because best seats go fast... and I live here.

Do you have any particular genre or show type preferences? Might get more clear-cut answers if you have more specific interests.

Thanks MPKIE, a couple of these I would be VERY interested in seeing. The Great comet and the Price look awesome. But unfortunately it looks like the Comet only runs until April, and The price runs until the week before we are in town. But agreed both of these look great! Will take a closer look at Oslo....seems an odd topic for a comedy? Not interested in Hello Dolly, not a Bette Midler fan. I was also thinking about the Waitress, as we really enjoyed the small performance we saw on the Tonys. I was thinking Jesse Mueller would be long gone by the time we are in town, but I see recent post saying she will be staying on until at least the spring. So that one moves up the list of possibilities for sure.

Broadway Concierge, not sure we have a particular genre or show type? We enjoy all genres. Big productions, musicals, dramas. I guess one thing is we are not big on seeing shows that are remakes.....would rather take a chance on a new show if that makes sense? Something more current than a production that originated 20-30 years ago.

Thanks! I was strictly going by their official website which has tickets onsale up to April 23rd. (I'm so glad I posted as this is great information!!) Does that mean Josh Groban is only contracted up to that date? Or not necessarily? I think we would be interested in the show even if not....

It just means that right now, tickets are only available up to that date. As the show opens, more blocks of seats for future will be up for purchase. I have no idea how long a Josh Groban is contracted for, but I would assume he'd be with the show until spring.

Ask again January about what the must sees for spring are. We don't know what all the spring shows will be, but by winter, there's typically more info about what is open.

If it's possible, consider Hamilton. Dear Evan Hansen and Waitress are good suggestions.

I will be visiting in May 2017 as well, and while most of the shows I'm considering have been mentioned (Olso, Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen, Miss Saigon)... The play I am really looking forward to is Little Foxes. I too am hoping that Natasha, Pierre will extend into May.

Wow 99 pandas, I just looked up Little Foxes and it does look very interesting! I'm not familiar with the production at all, is it a drama or a musical? Ok, after all the suggestions and information my list seems to be shifting!

Although I know you said you stay away from revivals, I foresee Hello, Dolly! with Bette Midler being the event of the spring.

Also, they haven't yet been announced, but War Paint and Amélie are two upcoming new musicals that you might want to consider keeping on your radar.

We're visiting in mid May (Wed-Sun) and expect to see 6-7 shows (depending on Sun eve offerings - Spamilton?)

Yeah, not really sure. I see it's listed as a Comedy/Drama, but don't know how that translate. I've always found shows about serious topics infused with smart humor tend to be fantastic and engaging shows.

Bummer about The Price. As for Comet, it's open-ended, meaning it will be playing unless it *unexpectedly* closes due to the economics of the show (i.e. poor sales or whatnot). Just need to wait for the next block of tickets for late spring to go on sale this fall or winter.

Great Comet is an open-ended run, so tickets will go on sale for May at some point, and according to the show's Twitter account, Josh is with the show for as long as tickets are on sale currently. My guess is that JG will extend (at least through the Tonys)

Funny you say that PaulWom, I was wondering if perhaps (fingers crossed) that the show and cast would stay on until after the Tonys which are in June I believe. I'm not sure if its normal (assuming the show is successful of course) to have performers nominated for roles and perform on the Tonys if they are not actually in the show at Tony time? I had that thought.....more wishful thinking maybe! :)
