okay this bugs me, when your voice sounds completley different on tape then it does live!! I noticed this also in a lot of people, Michael Arden for example on song clips and bootleg song clips of him live and they sound really different. Anyone know why this is??

Some people really can sing, while others cannot. The studio can do wonders to a person's voice.
Seems like on the recording...they sing the notes like they are written exactly but when you see them live they take a little bit more freedom with the part. Which is understandable...they're probably thinking about it more when they are making something that will be heard by many people that the people at one performance.
But it's also true that the people that can't sing can easily be made into marvelous singers with the magic of a studio.
Plus, being on a stage does something magical to your performance...which isn't something you get in a studio at times. Plus, on stage you are moving around and dancing, so it may not sound the same as when you are standing still or are limited to the space in the studio.

The studio can do wonders on a person's voice. I wish they'd just leave it as it is but, hey, what can you do? For those like me who can't see a show live and have to rely on the cast recording to hear the music, I'm very grateful that (so far as I've heard) they dont seem to touch up the voices as much as they would other artists. Comparing the voices of the cast on RENT on the recording and live, they sound the same thank goodness. But for some people, you hear them on a CD and fall in love with the beauty of their voices but when you hear them live, you're crushed because they can't sing half as well as you were made to believe. It can get to a point where the studio alters the voice so much it isnt even that person's voice anymore. Sad.
Not just the voices that are sometimes different. Take RENT for example. Seeing it live, the music is so "rock" and in your face, but on the recording it has been softened. I fell in love with the recording first and when I finally saw it live, and the chords struck up, I literally said, "WOW"
but also for another example, when someone records you on videotape and you sound completely different from yourself, and some people sound completely different, like that
ric
Yeah I noticed that with myself. Whenever I answer the telephone no one recognizes my voice. Or whenever I hear myself speak on a recording or video I just think "Wow, I sound like that?"
I know, I wish I could see RENT live! I've accepted the fact that the recording is the best I've got right now so I'll have to settle with the fact that it's softened but I really anticipate the day where I can hear it full out and live! Hopefully they won't try to soften it down for the movie.
anthony rapp said that we will be impressed with the sound from the soundtrack. So, I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!

Honestly, thats the thing I am looking forward to most: another recording of Rent. He's said its more geared toward rock, which sound sound great
That's why some of those "Broadway on Broadway" things and concerts in the park often make people sound like CRAP. The equipment is of a much lower quality...
