How long do you guys usually take for warming up your voice? Any ideas on how long is too long? I heard Idina warms up for like an hour and that seems a bit excessive to me. What is a good length?

About 15-20 minutes is what I usually do.

Just make sure you DO warm-up.
It is a necessity.

I do about 10 minutes and I agree with stick. I mean, without warming up you are going to kill your voice.

I know that not warming up is harmful, and I've also discussed this with my voice teacher. I was just curious what everyone else though. Since we all know that different teachers have different methods....

Different teachers have different methods, but they pretty much all agree on the purpose, just different rodes to the same place. I did meet one person that sang worse from warm-ups (much tighter than when he just went into rep). I've never met someone like that before, and I'm not sure what his voice teacher did, but since NYU is really big on health, I'm not to concerned about him. I think what Idina does is excessive, but it seems to work for her...I've had some teachers that take like 1/2 hour or more with me in lessons on exercises, but the one that got the most out of me only took like 15 min. As far as for myself, I tend to take about 10 min to warm-up, but I probably should do more.

Always at least a half hour...a must for me. My current voice teacher does intense warm ups during lessons that usually leave me sort of vocally tired after. I do longer, less strenuous warm ups on my own.

You should not be feeling vocally tired from warm-ups, if they're that intense, they might be doing you harm. Talk to your teacher, if he/she doesn't think it's a problem, get another opinion.

Yeah MusicPos2, exactly why Gregory Sheppard is becoming more and more appealing. I'm emailing him soon, just need to get a few things planned out and set.

I usually spent about 2-3 hours sometimes before a show.

I usually warm up anywhere from 15-30 minutes before I go on for a show or audition. It's enough to where I can reach my highest and lowest notes but I am not vocally tired or worn. It works for me. Also, a lot of it depends on your warm ups. If you are just doing some lip things and sighs or something, obviously you can spend a little more time doing it than if you were straight out singing scales and whatnot. Of course, I'm not a professional, so those are just views that I have for myself.
