we girls in musical theater whine all the time b/c a) too many of us, B) not enough roles

all i have ever heard is how much easier it is to be a boy in musical theater than a girl. well I am kinda getting sick of it. Seems like a disclaimer to me about why a lot of girls don't work. I am getting tired of it, so I am figuring I can set the record straight here.

first off:
there are actually MORE guys in equity than girls. If you look at the statistics that came out the past 2 years, there are more guys enrolled in the union than girls. so can we girls PLEASE stop whining about how the competition is "so much harder" for girls.

secondly:

Broadway is chock FULL of roles for girls and women. Let's look at the numerous shows on bway that have leading ladies and/or girl choruses: Spelling Bee, Phantom, Les Mis, Wicked, Legally Blonde, Grey Gardens, 110 In the shade, Spring Awakening, Curtains, Mamma Mia, Chicago, Mary Poppins.

So can we please stop annoyingly camplain about the lack of jobs for women in the current state of live theater, and just try and work at our voice lessons, and dance lessons and try to get better.
Thanks.

There is a shortage of roles in general, on Broadway, Off Broadway and Off Off. Lots of people want to be on stage and there are only so many stages. I agree that right now, there are some good things happening for women in musical theater. However, I also think there is a historical precedent that led to what you characterize as "whining" and there continue to be legitimate concerns for women in musical theatre.
