I am going to see the show tonight (comps!) and I am wondering if any of you have seen the big show sans live music. Is it bad? The musicians really got screwed there, huh? They got all cocky by staging their walk-out on the first performance, but look what happened. I feel bad that they are losing out on all this money, but it seemed like a pretty low thing to do in the first place.
let me guess... no one cares about this at all, am I right?
Its showbiz....The Show must go on...canned music or not, This is tourist season...and the Rockettes to NYC (holiday time) are like Rice to Asia
i would think that the masses that go see that show really don't care or notice that the music is recorded.

the fact of the matter is, people (esp. tourists, you're definitely right about that) will still go and see the show and take their kids to see it, and all that stuff. but, if you're a big theatregoer, the difference is pretty noticable. my best friend just saw the show for the first time in her life, and we both see as many shows as we can, and she said she definitely noticed. i guess it's all a matter of whether or not your ear is trained to what a live orchestra sounds like.

the musicians should have been paid! It's not fair that they were paid so badly anyway.
Then a again if I were a musician, I would do anything possible to stay away from those kinds of shows.
The musicians definitely got screwed. I'm pro-union all the way on this one.
And I won't support Radio City because of this.
I'm against it, but I can just picture this scene.
MAN FROM NOWHERESLAND, USA: Wow, that was great!
HIS WIFE: And that orchestra was excellent.
Do you think these people even know...or care?

I haven't seen any shows at Radio City, but when I read this thread, my mind jogged to seeing the tour of Lord of the Dance last year. I thought it odd that they danced to recorded music, and as much as I could understand why they did it, I think it took away from the performance, because it wasn't a live sound. But especially because it's Radio City, I don't think tourists will care too much. They will still go and see shows there, regardless, which is a sad thing to state, but I think it's probable.
I'm from Miami, FL and it wasn't until about three years ago when I started reading about theatre and going to as many shows as I could that I realized that musical theatre actors actually sing live on stage and (oh,what a surprise!)there's an actual orchestra playing the score. I am always ashamed of my previous ignorance and I'm sure other tourists are as unaware of such powerful and important theater elements as I used to be.

I have to concur with everyone else. Mr. & Mrs. NYC Tourist won't know, or care that the music is canned. I'm pro-union all the way on this, too, so I think the musicians were completely screwed, as they have been in other shows more than once. I personally think the Rockettes should have walked, too. What would the management have replaced them with? Projections?
Radio City should give some of the money back to their paying customers . They could give free programs as a start to all
If you see the Christmas show, you are good for 5 or 10 years before you see it again. Since we saw it about 3 years ago, we are good for a few years
Since I do not know the specific issues on both sides, I cannot take a position. Both sides should stay in a room & not leave ( even for bathroom breaks) until it is resolved. I wonder how they handle the orchestra going up & across to the back of the stage if there is no orchestra. The stage is massive & there is no sight like seeing a full Radio City Orchestra playing.
