Sorry Dollypop, but carol would have been admitted to an ICU had she even attempted the last 3 bars....

I tottally agree.
I remember showing my friend who's not at all into musical theatre the end of that song, and I said, "Now, tell me that's not talent!"
She loved it btw. and now mentions it a lot. lol

Posted: 6/18/03 at 4:54pm30 seconds do not a performance make. Besides, a "woman of a certain age" (as Dolly is described in Thornton Wilder's detailed stage directions for THE MATCHMAKER) would not do that kind of vocalizing. TGC says we can appreciate That Streisand Woman for her artistry, "but a barrel of laughs she ain't".

Posted: 6/18/03 at 5:27pmDon't let Dollypop fool you. This outrage over "That Streisand Woman" is all an act. He once gave a glowing review on her performance in "Funny Girl" on the other message board.

a "woman of a certain age" ..
Did Wilder mean "a woman 74 years of age"...because that's the age Channing was the last time she did it in 1995, right...and some would find it a little, well, odd to see a 74 year old trying to play a 40-ish woman...
...so the "woman of a certain age" thing, goes both ways...

Theater is illusion. TGC could convince an audience she was an infant if she had to!
(Albin, keep your mouth shut or I'll talk to my Uncle Carmine and you'll REALLY be sleeping with the fishes!)

I think Dollypop is just bitter than Carol Channing was not chosen to recreate HER ROLE on film. That has nothing to do with Barbra's talent; he seems to just think that she was miscast (which I would have to agree with on some level).
But let's take into consideration that even if it hadn't been Barbra, producers did not want Carol for the film version. I said this in another thread....before Barbra came along, Producers wanted Elizabeth Taylor! At least Barbra can sing, cause God knows Liz can't (even though she's a great actress). They would have been doubing her voice.

Posted: 6/18/03 at 9:43pmI recall reading that Hollywood wanted Lucille Ball for Dolly. When she didn't get it she sought out Mame, well she did it and we all know how that turned out!

Yes, Lucy was also considered for the role of Dolly. Another one who can't sing well. "Hey look me over! Lend me an ear!" ahhhh ![]()
More stupid facts, Carol Burnett was considered for Funny Girl (the Broadway version obviously) until Barbra auditioned. They said Barbra looked (or at least had the personality) of the real Fanny Brice.
