And what critics are really "qualified" for the job, in the traditional sense? Other than Feingold and Cote, very few of them have any degrees in theatre or the performing arts or any practical experience as a theatrical professional (Feingold at least has worked professionally as an adaptor and translator -- especially of Brecht -- lyricist and dramaturg, and Cote used to work with Richard Foreman).
Most other critics were English or journalism majors who worked as general reporters before "falling into" doing theatre coverage and later became critics usually almost by accident (including Brantley who was an entertainment reporter for various magazines and a movie reviewer before he became a theatre critic for the Times).

I do some reviews for BroadwayWorld.
I've got great experience as an actor: community theater, regional, summer stock, dinner theater, touring companies.
I've directed over 40 productions (high school, community theater)
I've done some television acting.
I've degined sets for BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and MY FAIR LADY.
I've got a Master's Degree in Victorian Literature and am an avid theater-goer.
I also do celebrity interviews for BroadwayWorld and have gotten to know some impressive people in the performing arts.
Does this make me "legit"? I leave it to you to answer that.
I think anyone's opinion of art is "legitimate" as long as its genuine.
That said... I don't think any one person's opinion is more relevant than anyone else's... regardless of so-called "credentials" or "expertise."
Classes, degrees, and attendance records don't substitute for, or trump, any human being's reaction to artistic stimulation.

Victorian Literature, huh? That's something you don't hear about every day. How interesting!
Dolly, you are definitely legit
Ditto for Margo
I would be a bad criric . A show has to be the equivalent of a turd for me not to like it
As mentioned, some of the BWW "reviewers" have bios listed on their columns. Some have degrees others do not. I think I'm safe in saying that all have a genuine love of the theater and enjoy the opportuinty to bring their theater experiences to the BWW readers. I might add that all volunteer their time and efforts for BWW, which I know Rob & Craig appreciate.
I've submitted about 73 articles for BWW since I was brought on to cover the Philadelphia/ S. Jersey area since 2003. Prior to that I wrote about 50 articles for Talkin'Broadway from 2001-2003.
In addition to my pro bono work with these sites, I also am a part-time freelance writer and have been compensated for program articles I was asked to write for Peter Nero & The Philly Pops, The Eastern Center For Performing Arts and other venue projects.
Besides writing, I am a independant booking agent and events planner working with various Broadway and regional performers and venues. I produce and manage a series of Broadway theatrical workshops for schools and community/regional theater groups. I was also asked to serve as a student mentor for the Merriam Theater's student critics program.
I have no desire to be involved in anything that would put me onstage or in the limelight.
FYI, I am actively seeking an additional reviewer for the Philadelphia area to assist me and in time take over the region. Feel free to contact me at pbspotlight@yahoo.com.
