i just got my letter granting me an netc audition (new england theatre conference). this is my first time applying to the netc so i'm really excited that i got given a live audition. they're extremely competitive (or so i hear) and it's not easy to get a live audition. i'm extremely happy about this guys! so what i am wondering is has anyone else here done these auditions? could you tell me some stories or how they went? any advice would be greatly appreciated since i haven't been to these before. thank you so much guys. andrew

ps. I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS!

Well...I auditioned at the SETC (Southeastern Theatre Conference), which is the same thing, but different region. It's been several years, but I'll tell you what was what for me. You get 60 seconds for a monologue and 90 seconds for monologue and song. If you do both, you'll want to spend most of your 90 seconds on your strong suit, be it song or acting. You will be given a number upon registration and that number will determine the day that you audition and the time. If you are musical and acting, they may require a small dance audition. Anyways, you will line up outside the audition room with 20-25 others and go in as a group, as the previous group finishes. Do not be late. You will be taken in and seated and then seen one by one on a stage in front of 50 to 150 theatre companies. The earlier the audition, the more companies are around. When you walk onto the stage you should know that your 60-90 seconds begins from your first word. Save time...just say your number, they have your name in front of them and a copy of your headshot/resume. Do take the time to network when you are not at the audition. After some time (can't remember how much), you will be taken to a room that has a list for each company represented on a wall. That list will have numbers, which are you. If you are on that list and interested in them, it will have a hotel room for you to go to and sign up for a private interview and audtions (call back). Even if you don't get a lot of call backs, go to the hotel rooms and talk to the people in their down time...mingle and network, cause there might be an unpaid position to get you in the door. Also, have many copies of your headshot, with resume on the back. I took about 100 and used almost all of them. Slide them under doors, give them to friends, and sell yourself. It's a conference, not a 90 second win/lose thing. Take the time to learn and enjoy. Remember everyone is competing for a job and be cautious of information you give people. Most are friendly. If you can, book your hotel room early, and in the hosting hotel, where the conference is held. It is worth it, simply for the bar scene and to mingle at night. Do sleep well before you audition, even if it means tylenol pm. When you choose your audtion piece, it should stick out and not be repetetive, but DO NOT use shock value pieces or strong language. I had a friend blow it by changing her monologue between state audition and SETC and it ended with "Do you wanna f**k me?" They were not impressed! She got 2 callbacks, but on the other end, she pounded the hotel halls and landed a summer job. Do not sing anything from the best of broadway series...choose a lesser known piece. Same with the monologue. Do some research and have your acting coach/teacher help you find it. Highlight your good. If you are a character actor, do a character piece. If you are comedic, do comedy and if you can cry on cue, do drama. Do not pick this time to "show your range." Same with song. Play it strait! Break a leg...hope this helps.

well the auditions are a fairly different process (though some the same). there was already a round through applications including resumes and headshots which have already been given to every theatre company. they accept half the people to an acting room (2 contrasting monologues) and half to the musical theatre room (2 contrasting songs OR 1 song and 1 monologue). so i've already been "given" to all the theatre, but now they will get to see me live as well! anyway. the rest sounds similar except they lead you in groups of 5 it says. then the companies put up lists of callbacks and then there is a dance call at the end of the day for actors that theatres ask to attend the dance call. i don't need to stay at the hotel since i live extremely close to it. but thanks for sharing your experiences! did you get a job out of it? is there anyone else out there who has been to the netc auditions?
