This is one of those roles that I really want to play!
Marius definitely has some tenor-like qualities to him, yet his notes aren't distinctly "tenor."
Maybe you guys can answer this one my friends and I have been debating:
Can a baritone with a strong head voice sing Tony in WSS?

A strong head voice? mmm hate those terms.
Sorry i think unless you can tilt and produce cry quality up to the Gs and the one B flat then there aint much point doing Tony. Its a legit sound and without that (or relying on what you call "head voice" would make Tony even more of a wimp than he is)
As for Marius some who have played the part in West End have sang it in higher keys. It just depends really. Michael Ball is certainly no "tenor" he is a high baritone. As is the current Marius, Hayden Tee. Great top notes but tons of depth down on the bottom. In fact he has a stronger lower range than the current West End Javert!

I don't know many tenors who can sing a low G. I'd say it's a baritone part.

Light Baritone is a phrase that can be used.
It's what I am myself, and I can sing the part of Marius with ease...

I think much more of a baritone vocally. Personality and physically wise, it's a much more tenor role, I think.
Maybe Marius swings both ways?
Maybe Marius swings both ways?
Sure, if you believe some of that fic.
Anyway, I'm surprised no one has posted this yet.
Marius
Lyric tenor
Top G
20-30’s.
Romantic lead. A student. Attractive, masculine. High pop tenor (sings to A) with strong low notes.

Yeah, just the quality of his voice for the part seems like it leans towards tenor. I think singing G's and A's constitutes tenor notes, no? Boq and Fiyero in Wicked only sing G's and are considered tenors. Jimmy in TMM sings A flat and is a tenor. Where do you draw the line.

Bari-tenor is a popular term used for the guys who have to be able to sing as high as they do low...marius is incredibly range-y.
