Well, it's a couple of small songs together but there's the part of Jekyll & Hyde from "This is the Moment" through "Alive." The mood completely changes, as well as the character.

"The Rumble" in a way from West Side Story. Almost everyone is technically happy at the beginning of it, b/c they're sure they'll "win," but it is complete chaos at the end, and as a musician, I loove this song. It is the single most difficult songs I have ever played and yet one of the most rewarding. Leonard Bernstein is a genius, if you simply listen to the music, you can hear everything that is happening through the music, the fight, the stabbing, the chaos ensuing after, the realizations, man.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

well, in a way "Could I leave you?" from FOLLIES. In a vague way it applies to this thread because Phyllis starts the song all cool and sophisticated but as it continues her remarks become crude and viscious without the wit and class and she goes into a rage. Brilliant. Though she isn't at all happy in the beginning of this song (is anyone happy in FOLLIES?) and doesn't go to a doomed perspective. She does switch her mood on taking Ben's suggestion of leaving. So in a WAY...
"Sing the words, Patti!!!!" Stephen Sondheim to Patti LuPone.
