What's the musical that you have the biggest personal connection to?
 Jul 26 2013, 05:46:51 PM
The first musical I ever saw was Cathy Rigby as Peter Pan when it came to St. Louis around 1989. I was only 2, but I remember staying awake for at least the first act in the Darling home. Still one of my favorite shows, and it was even better when I saw her do it this past year, almost 23 years to the day of my first time.

The only other show that I had a major connection to was doing Seussical. I love everything about it, and it just made so much more sense with a teenage cast than it does with adults. Thankfully, I had the chance to play Horton in both the St. Louis Premiere, and the St. Louis High School Premiere, pictured below.

Besides the PC thing, I believe the goal was to go closer to the original Barrie play/story/etc, and make the show a bit more realistic as opposed to the pastel/dayglo world of the original production.

Checking the licensing the easiest way, but you're not going to find many plays on the ones listed, since most of them are for musicals only. Try Samuel French, or Dramatists Play Service. They hold the rights for the majority of plays not in the public domain.

the warn the duke line makes a lot more sense in the book. the little boy is warning houdini that he should warn archduke franz ferdinand about the shooting that initiates the start of world war I. in the book, houdini is over in europe performing, and he meets the archduke. when he is back in the u.s., he hears of the assassination of the archduke, he recalls hearing edgar say "warn the duke" when he first meets him.

With the Reba-Stokes production of South Pacific, I never took it as Emile not being white. Brian Stokes Mitchell as played almost every race he can.

at the same time, you have Lillias White as Bloody Mary. Now, I may be wrong so don't hold me to this, but Mary is Tonkinese/Polynesian, which can be traced back to Taiwan and other Asian nations.
