Re CITY OF ANGELS, the Stephen King story was not published till 1993 4 years after CITY OF ANGELS premiered so unless Larry Gelbart got some kind of very advanced look that seems unlikely

Did I miss  CITY OF ANGELS? I am not aware it is based on anything specific though it obviously parodies/ pays homage to several classic 40s films

Best "papering" service
 Sep 14 2023, 03:56:06 PM

Sorry I know this has come up before but sometimes things change. I was wondering if people had a "favorite" among the various services that offer tickets for a nominal fee with membership. I have done Gold Club and Play by Play and am considering Theater Extras . I am open to others. I like a variety of entertainment but mainly theater. Is there mu

Shows that Never went to London
 Aug 18 2023, 01:00:32 AM

As noted A GENTLEMAN'S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER can not be performed in London or indeed most anywhere outside the US. Studio Canal the owner of the film KIND HEARTS & CORONETS sued to stop it in the US saying it violated their copyright but GENTS won a summery judgement saying it was based on the novel which was out of copyright. Frankly having done a little research I am surprised ( but thrilled) that GENTS won the court case because the idea of both one person playing all the victi

Walking Out at Intermission - The Thread

Just curious after reading this tweet:

Technically never but last year I walked out right after The Oldest Profession at Encores THE LIFE. I really wanted to see that number but otherwise I would have walked out intermission. I am sure I have seen a couple of thousand plays over many decades (  maybe a few hundred on Broadway)

Most suspenseful play you've seen?

Deathtrap & The Shining City.

Sean Hayes / Oscar Levant - The Jewish Part
 Apr 25 2023, 06:44:42 PM

well I actually meant that for James Edwards ( also the name of of the great African American film actors ironically) but I don't post here much and I thought I replied to him but  no it would not be OK for any WHITE person ( Jew , Christian, Muslim etc) to play a black person. I am a Jew and I find this discussion nuts. Judaism is not an ethnicity. There is no makeup that will make a white person black or Hispanic no matter how good an actor they are.

Are you equally outraged that a non Jew ( Raul Esparza) is playing Fagin in the encores revival of Oliver?

Current state of various

I can't speak to a specific service but TE is not the one I belong to or started the thread over
I will say things have picked up lately. I went to a wonderful concert at Carnegie Hall last week and keep missing ( as in they are gone before I can get them) several off Broadway shows I would go to

Current state of various
 Jan 23 2023, 02:25:38 PM

The vast majority of the offerings are NOT Broadway shows and I find it hard to believe that all plays, concerts, shows etc don't have a lot of empty seats at the moment. The great thing about these services for an impoverished theater/arts person like me was that I could try out some wonderful work I would probably never have thought to see but right pickings are beyond slim

Thanks for the info and glad to know it is not just "my" service. Alas on my budget even a $50 TDF ticket is a stretch I can only do once in a while so I rely on the seat filler services for most of my theater. Fingers crossed that some things will pop up.

Current state of various "papering services"
 Jan 22 2023, 07:30:02 PM

I know not to mention either a specific service or shows but I want to know if anyone else is seeing super crappy options with services. I only belong to one ( I used to belong to two) and generally there are at least a good number of off and off off Broadway plays, concerts etc but in the last two plus weeks it has been awful and January has usually been a good time. I am not expecting Broadway just some interesting preferably plays but also music to see and almost nothing, never seen it thi

Tony-winning director Frank Galati (Ragtime, Grapes of Wrath) has passed away
 Jan 3 2023, 12:11:54 PM

I grew up in Chicago and while Mr. Galati is better known as a director and writer he was at truly great actor. He played Henry Carr in a 1979 production of TRAVESTIES that literally changed my life and turned me into a theater nerd. I also saw a terrific production of 1776 he directed just a few years ago in Sarasota.

Year End Theater Quiz: A Look Back at 2022
 Jan 1 2023, 01:00:51 AM

Angela Lansbury DID sing in movies prior to being in musicals. She played a cafe singer and sang in THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY ( She sang GOODBYE LITTLE YELLOW BIRD which she reprised in an episode of MURDER SHE WROTE. That was the one that was false.

SeatGeek's New Fees
 Dec 19 2022, 05:31:28 PM

Is this for ticket from theater or reseller ( do they do both sorry not too up on these things)?  preCovid I would go to boxoffice for friends or even friends of friends to get tickets because the fees were CRAZY. I also found the people at the box office super helpful since they obviously know the theater. Whenever possible go directly to box office and you can probably have a nice meal on the money you savel.

AIN'T NO MO to close December 18
 Dec 9 2022, 11:21:06 PM

I was there tonight and Mr. Cooper made an impassioned speech partly attacking Broadway for not being more open to plays like his.He kept saying Broadway has to change. I found the play thrilling but messy.  As a white person there was clearly a lot I was not going to get. I can't imagine in what world anyone could have seen this as a show that could survive on Broadway. Broadway shows need  tourists, suburbanites etc to buy tickets. I got my ticket at a steep discount, I am a d

Based Papering Service - 2021?
 Oct 21 2022, 02:04:47 AM

I only have play by play but think it has a good mix of non theater offerings. Very little sports since a reupped in April but good selection of concerts, dance, some offbeat stuff. There have been some MSG events but not sports.

Inexpensive Theatre District Food Recommendations?
 Oct 7 2022, 05:04:42 PM

Tonight I am making my 3rd trip on a week to Silky Kitchen on 46th between 6th and 7th. Insanely good and authentic ( they have a few other location in NYC) I am not likely to try pigs trotters or  chicken gizzards but what I have had is amazing. Entrees run around $15 & 16 and portions are HUGE.
