First time for me was the original London company, Earl Carpenter was on for the beast, and for some reason, Belle was swapped out mid way through the first half (with a 20 min pause). I was taken with the design and it was somewhat magical.

1988 awards was held at the Minskoff, yet phanrom was there, candelabra and all. 

the clip starts with the boat onstage and ALL the candles rise up, they even have the black wings/legs from the show, which makes me wonder, was this done as a split presentation, where the boat part was filmed earlier at the majestic for the broadcast and inserted in, then Music of the Night performed live at the minskoff? because at the end

I love the show, but like alot of my other favourite shows, i have more of a sentimental connection to it, so i love it on that level rather that because of what the show is about.

Was my second cast recording and second ALW show recording so i did get into the music, then I bought a london brochure and was fascinated with the character makeup and wig design. Only saw the original London version and the Broadway revival, i regret not seeing the original brodway production with the whol

This is my 2 cents after seeing it back in January.

 

It felt sterile and cold (and not because of the snow) it just felt at one time like a theme park show, yet shallow. Perhaps the effects could have been better although I loved the projections.

There is something about Lion King I love, the aesthetic and all that makes you feel like you are watching something special (faults asside), with Frozen I felt like I was almost watching a film, there was a strange disconn

The other thing to consider, with a show like Phantom, it might be a rusk for them to do anything drastic like changing things to projections (led screens) as that would be a HUGE expense for a show that basically has been running forever and already has working sets, so in the long run it wont reduce running costs but rather add more expense.

But on the other hand i am sure CamMac is itching to change up things so he wont have to continue with what i am sure are hefty royalties to Mar

One of the updates they could look into surely is new lighting. not to change the look of the piece, but to update it to cost efficient lights as I believe Phantom is one of the only shows on Broadway with the original lights still going, it must cost them alot monthly.

 

What i do dread however is them thinking maybe of moving to a smaller house now that they have 2 prototypes of the "brilliant original' that have been redesigned for smaller houses. I hope it does

regarding the set coming out into the audience, there was a timelapse load in video on youtube and you can kinda see what they mean

 

its not the set so much as it is the lighting. the whole back piece seems to be a vid screen (not projections) and coming off the stage either side are these vertical 'strings' that are apparently LED (think of a times sq billboard, but made up of vertical strings with spaces between) so when they light up it carries the effect out in

obviously there are difference, but this curtain is the one they are using (the last UK/US tour was similar but red)

I am not hating this, as it retains most of the feel and design essence of what Maria did. Still waiting for photos of the actual scenes to comment more. I don't quite get the purpose of having a broken looking proscenium that stays broken looking throughout the show.

I still cant decide if I liked the show or not. Usually I go in for technical wizardry in shows but this and Aladdin just felt sterile to me.

I do however like to see how far projections and video screens have come, I would have never known the back wall was a video screen if i didn't have binoculars, and freezing the theatre was a nice touch towards the end.
