pop voice for elphaba

Who else thinks that Elphaba really should be played by an actress with a pop voice? Idina Menzel and Shoshana Bean sing the crap out of that part and it just seems better to have their kind of voices rather than more legit musical theatre voices. What does everyone else think?

Anyone ever attend one of these that are not a member of equity? Do they see non-equity people? Also, it says to sing pop/rock, but would they be against a song from the show? Thanks.
