i don't know anything about zac efron being cast as link, but according to a news article, lucas grabeel got a callback for the part. he plays ryan evans in high school musical (the blonde brother who can actually sing and dance very well).
that's the link to the article. the hairspray info should be somewhere towards the end of it.

i don't listen to the beauty and the beast recording anymore, even though i'm currently participating in the musical.
