Jelly's Last Jam at Signature Theatre
 Aug 18 2016, 03:38:37 PM

I saw Jelly's Last Jam at Signature last weekend and I am still in awe.  I knew nothing of the musical before seeing it and only knew one of Jelly's songs.  I was blow away by the first act---probably one of the most compelling, exciting, visually stunning piece of theatre I have seen anywhere.  Every single cast member is amazing and the tap dancing is other-worldly.  I would highly encourage seeing it.

They have posted some pull quotes from the (mostly positive) reviews of the show on the website and have some interesting videos as well.

Peter Marks lists West Side Story as one of the top shows he saw in 2015.  Hamilton is number one and Dear Evan Hanson is number two.

West Side Story at Signature Theatre
 Dec 18 2015, 09:50:52 AM

I saw this last week and I still can't stop thinking about it.  It was one of the most exciting nights of musical theatre that I have ever experienced.  The 17-piece orchestra with the 30 person cast in a 300 seat theatre is mind-blowing--I had goose bumps for much of the evening.  All of the leads were absolutely amazing both vocally and in their interpretation of the roles.  The dancing is stunning--the choreographer took the base of Robbins work and adjusted it to w

Songs that get stuck in your head

I was just thinking about this the other day after watching the preview video for "The Fix."  The song, I assume, is called "One-Two-Three" but that is a guess.  I can not get it out of my head.

Barrett Wilbert Weed and Wes Taylor in Cabaret in DC

I decided that I wanted to see the Cabaret again, mostly to hear Barrett Wilbert Weed sing because she gave me goosebumps when I saw it the first time.  When I went to buy tickets,  I discovered that Signature Theatre has a new swanky website.  I am not sure about the repeating video of Wesley Taylor popping out of the door---I think I almost had a seizure--but overall I was impressed.

""Are they using the stage version of the original finale, as indicated by GetUp&LiveIt ('the principals repeated their lines referencing their blindness to the outside world") or the version used on the original cast recording, as indicated by Alix ("the main characters each reprising a bit of their songs")?"
Oh, it was probably lines of dialogue, like GetUp&LiveIt said.

Not being familiar with previous endings,

Barrett Wilbert Weed and Wes Taylor in Cabaret in DC

I saw Cabaret at Signature Theatre last night and was completely blown away.  Barrett Wilbert Weed was absolutely incredible as Sally Bowles.  She broke my heart, gave me chills, and was my favorite part of the show.  Wesley Taylor was perfectly sexy/creepy as the Emcee and man can he dance--his high kicks were higher than anyone. In fact, the whole cast is uniformly excellent as are the costumes, sets and lighting.

Matthew Gardiner is a genius in his staging, t

The first review of Cabaret at Signature Theatre in DC.  4.5 Stars

"Cabaret is a warhorse of musical theater now going on for five decades. Signature Theatre’s production is vital and forbidding in its political aspects. The musical numbers are sung with affection, care and strength when about the messiness of love and relationships. The musical numbers are sung with an acidic flavor when appropriate. As for the production numbers at the end of each Act, they each bring the House down. There are certainly plenty of new terrors out in the world since Cabaret first appeared; yet its bite remains sharp, deadly, and fresh in the current Signature Theatre production."

I am seeing the production this week, after having only seen the movie and a production at Keegan Theatre in DC.

Signature Theatre tweeted out this video today that highlights some of the songs from Kid Victory. It makes me want to go see it again.

New John Kander musical to premier at the signature

Kid Victory is something very special, experimental and unique. If you like to be challenged by musicals, then you will enjoy this show. Even though there are a couple graphic scenes, they are necessary to demonstrate what happened to fundamentally change Luke while he went missing for a year.

I thought the score was quite good and the story was well-plotted. It can be hard to follow a bit, as some is told in flashbacks and the chorus comes in and out to provide context and support moments, but it all comes together as the show ends. The cast is mostly excellent--standouts included Christiane Noll as the overbearing mother, Sarah Litzsinger as the quirky confidant, and Jeffrey Denman as the change agent for Luke. These three actors were remarkable.

The ending of Kid Victory, for me, was so well constructed musically and emotionally that I was moved to tears. The last moment provides a great deal of hope and optimism and makes Luke's journey (even the rough spots) rewarding. Again, this musical will not be for everyone, but if you are up for a challenge, you should not miss Kid Victory.

Note: The show is a little less than 2 hours long with no intermission. Given that the set stretches across the entire stage at Signature, I would have to guess that the partial view seats are not great. That said, the show I attended they were moving people from the partial view seats into the main section as there were plenty of seats available.

I bought my ticket after watching this trailer, mostly because John Kander looks so into it when he is playing the piano.

I found this report from a blogger in DC who went to opening night of Witches of Eastwick. Sounds like it was quite enjoyable but still needs some work.
