re: Broadway Shows as 3D Movies - I Can't Wait! May 24
2009, 01:42:41 AM
I just like the idea of being able to see a show in the movie theater, 3D or not. Of course, nothing beats seeing them on Broadway and I sincerely wish I could see a lot of shows that way...but I'm stinkin' dirt poor. Any chance to see a show in a way I can afford, I'll take it. I went to the Rent showing and it was awesome and I've been hoping to see more.

I believe Houdini is planned for the 2010-11 season. I could be wrong, but that's what I'm remembering. Pure Country is also a possibility, since they've finally announced some cast. Though it was a possibility last season too, so who knows when it will actually debut.

It hasn't happened yet that more than 2 film adaptations have been nominated (that I've noticed) so Billy, Shrek, and 9 to 5 all being nominated is a pretty slim chance. The "mainstream/commercialism" angle is certainly valid, but Rock of Ages can fill that as well if it's a hit, as I think it will be. Jukebox musicals tend to be hit-or-miss, but word of mouth has been strong.

I don't know all the shows well enough to say too much, but I say West Side Story SHOULD perform one of the upbeat numbers like "Cool." No doubt "Somewhere" and "Tonight" are excellent Broadway standards, but when I'm watching the Tonys I want to see some pizazz, man. And I can see Rock of Ages going with "Here I Go Again." The performance of it on Conan was pretty sweet. They could easily do a medley as well, as jukebox musicals have been known to do.

re: Most Likely Nominees for Best Musical at the TONY's Feb 17

BILLY ELLIOT NEXT TO NORMAL ROCK OF AGES SHREK It seems to be a trend that no more than 2 film adaptations are nominated, so Shrek and 9 to 5 will likely compete against each other for a spot (few will dispute that Billy Elliot is in). If 9 to 5 is a hit, it could slip in, but right now I think Shrek will take it. Next to Normal sweeps in to qualify and I think it has a good chance of stealing a spot from Story of My Life. They are both apparently fairly intimate shows, but
