Orginal Bway script

Nov 22, 2004 — 8:39:19 PM

RENT's songs wouldn't qualify, since they weren't written for the film, but for the theatre. You would need an all-new song (like an Angel/Joanne duet or something :P) to qualify. For example: "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge could qualify. Nothing else from the musical could. Better example: "You Must Love Me" from EVITA.

Guys, come on. I wouldn't want them to cut the characters, either. The point of that argument was that they need to IMPROVE the characters as it is to stay close to the original RENT (and, by extension, on LA BOHEME). You still need a strong supporting cast (that sings, no less) -- not just a supporting cast in tribute/name only. So either improve them by making it closer to the source material, or cameo them and focus solely on the principals. That's my argument, from a writer's perspective.

You're an Idina fan, so I'm sure you'd disagree. No -- trust me; I love the Maureen and Joanne characters of RENT. Their dynamic is one of my favorite plot lines (I always enjoyed it more than Collins and Angel's seemingly forced relationship) so I'm rather peeved that the script goes to such great lengths to shove it in the back drawer. But really, the way the script is tailored, Maureen's performance DOES drive the plot, but the character herself does not. Heck, all they'd really need is to...

re: RENT SCREENPLAY

First post. I have been a fan of Rent for years and know every word -- like many of you -- verbatim. But this screenplay simply is not that good. I was wholly jazzed about this movie and have been reading on all of the casting updates, but man-o-man, do I pray that this screenplay is overhauled. As it stands, it's mediocre at best. Overall, I just have to say that the script is very imbalanced. All of the songs seem to be crammed somewhere in the middle of the film, and it's insanely imbalanc...
