The song is about the struggles of people living with HIV/AIDS celebrating the moment living their life in love. It's an homage to all those that have passed. To see it used to hock jewelry (with only hetero images) is offensive. Hopefully that helps you understand why it is offensive to some be it before mothers day, christmas, valentines day, etc.

I saw it as well, and it really upset me. Seasons of Love has such a special meaning and place in my heart to see it cheapened for a jewelry ad was upsetting enough, but to also see the exclusively mainstream hetero images used as the song played was just wrong. I'm angry with Macy's, but more so I'm horrified the owners of the music (I assume the producers of RENT) would think so little of the message behind the song to sell it for a jewelry commercial. Something wonderful just died a little.
