I'm watching Celebrity Apprentice and there was a Macy's fine jewelry commercial that used "Seasons of Love". It didn't really fit if you ask me, but glad to hear a Broadway song on a popular commercial.
Not gonna lie, it kind of gave me chills hearing it again after several years. But I agree, didn't fit the ad.
yah I just saw the ad while wtching the celebrity apprentice. It was nice to hear Rent on a commercial

I saw it as well, and it really upset me. Seasons of Love has such a special meaning and place in my heart to see it cheapened for a jewelry ad was upsetting enough, but to also see the exclusively mainstream hetero images used as the song played was just wrong. I'm angry with Macy's, but more so I'm horrified the owners of the music (I assume the producers of RENT) would think so little of the message behind the song to sell it for a jewelry commercial.
Something wonderful just died a little.
Doesn't the Larson family own the rights-I assumed they did.It was sad to see everything the song stands for stripped away in the most banal, heterosexist mainstream ad celebrating materialism: love=jewelry. But I guess the folks who own the song need to eat.
I think they were going for a love angle and giving the jewelry to someone you love. The use didn't bother me at all and I enjoyed their version of it. It was nice to hear it.
I completely agree uncageg... its a beautiful song and more power to Macy's for using it.
I don't see how this commerical, running right before Mother's Day and bridal season, would be offensive to anyone.
I don't think anyone was offended by the commercial, it just seems "Seasons of Love" was ill-fitting based on the spirit of the material and the musical RENT. Most "standards" used in commercials are classics in a different way than "Seasons of Love."

The song is about the struggles of people living with HIV/AIDS celebrating the moment living their life in love. It's an homage to all those that have passed. To see it used to hock jewelry (with only hetero images) is offensive. Hopefully that helps you understand why it is offensive to some be it before mothers day, christmas, valentines day, etc.

I just think people are reading into it too much! They evidentally wanted the lyrics "Seasons of Love" to represent what the commercial was "about".
