Lesser Known Musical Cast Recordings

Track down "The Nervous Set" from 1959 by Fran Landesman and Tommy Wolf. Someone else I cannot think of is also credited with authorship. The cast included a very young Larry Hagman. Anyway, it has a fun, late 50s, beatnik Village score and tucked inside is "The Ballad Of Sad Young Men". one of the most exquisite songs ever written for the theatre.

Why so little NYMF buzz this year?

The reality is that buzz is generated by promoters and many of them have distanced themselves a bit from this year's festival. The inevitable showdown between DG and NYMF over 2011 opens the possibility of major changes for next fall. That could mean a significant restructuring of the festival which is itself worthy of buzz. But this year a little distance is prudent.

The festival came under serious fire earlier this year regarding several contract concerns and the Dramatists Guild discouraged its members from participation. A 2 percent/ten year subsidiary rights agreement (in author excess of $20,000) in the NYMF contract was deemed excessive by the guild. The industry has eyed the festival warily in the past. Respectfully, as someone who has occasion to hire singers, I typically go with a good chest production over a head voice. I find lyrics are more easily understood and there is much greater flexibility, shading and nuance in a belt voice. If I hear something that smacks at all of "technique" I know I cannot use it. It will sound artificial to an audience. That said, any voice that conveys lyric intelligently (Barbara Cook being a masterful example) gets the job. I have had to tell more than

Hey folks, weigh in for real: For several years the Broadway On Broadway concert has ended with a sing-along of "New York, New York". In a nod to the new, this year's concert ended with "Empire State Of Mind", which is a platinum seller and pretty huge currently. Neither song hails from Broadway. So... opinions?

Hi Myron. "Next To Normal" chose "Mountains" from the very first meeting because it showcases Marin Mazzie, who is perceived to be the drawing card currently. "Superboy" was done last year and some web site simply picked up old information.

Hi Myron. Regarding yesterday's concert: Broadway shows both running and in production for the upcoming season are invited to present numbers of their own choosing. Sometimes long-running or established pieces like "Jersey Boys" pass because the main focus of the concert is on the new season. That said, typically an understudy has done "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You". "Poppins" did "Supercali..." in the past. For whatever reason those shows ("Night Music" as well) passed this year. "Robert and Elizabeth" is a lovely score. "Isaac" is dated in a wonderful way.
